SSID is the network name (defaults to Belkin), which you see when you search for wireless networks in windows. If the name isn't being broadcast, then you might not see it in the windows scanner.

When I right click on the wireless network connection and ask it to show me available wirelees networks it cant find any - although the wlan, lan, and connected lights are lit up on the router.

check that the broadcast ssid tick box is enabled in the router config.

Also, many laptops have a switch or keyboard combination to turn wireless on/off, check you haven't knocked it off.

Sorry, completely missed post 10 (probably because you posted 2 in quick succession)

Are you able to connect PC - router - cable modem using ethernet cables only (not usb)?

The release and renew, drops the your ip address from the internet which is this

    SolKnows-leplo.jpg

and picks up a local ip address from your router, a 192.168.2.x address.

The router then translates between the two. The IP address is the address that allows you to talk on the internet.

If you don't have enough ethernet cables, just connect the PC to router using ethernet, then

    start, run, cmd
    black box will come up.

    in it type

    ipconfig /release

    then

    ipconfig /renew

    then go to http://192.168.2.1

press return past the username and passwords, and then check the wireless settings for ssid broadcast etc.

Sorry for the delay. Amongst other things I had a few probs getting back on :(

I did what you suggested above - got on to the belkin site - but don't know what I need to check there.

It gave me several boxes with info in, then when I clicked on ssid gave me that specific info.

    Many thanks albertross

The info from the 'wireless connection and ssid' page is this -

    wireless channel > 11

    ssid > belkin 54g

    wireless mode > 54g auto

    broadcast ssid > *tick*

    protected mode > on

turbo mode > 125 high speed mode
