Cable wifi connection died mid-post - unable to reconnect????

Hi guys
Can I ask for your help please? I have trawled through the (numerous!) posts with 'wireless', 'wifi' etc in them but either a different set-up to me or too technical for myself that's never tampered with network settings before (and i'm not sure they apply to my setup).
I have BB cable net access via a belkin router on a siemens lappy. My wifi connection has been fine since installed last november and signal strength is excellent.
I was happily writing a new post when I got a 'network connection unavailable' balloon from the wifi icon and my internet connection died. I've plugged in my ntl cable and it works fine so something has gone wrong from my lappy to my router.
Lappy and router were both new november last year and since setting up I have had no problems.
Just before the connection died windows auto downloaded updates. I installed them, then got an error message box saying 'rthdcpl.exe illegal system dll relocation' (with a lot more text I wont bother you with at the moment). Couldnt click on the 'ok' in the box - cursor disappeared behind the box. This only went approx 3 days later when another auto download was installed that fixed this particular error message. I thought they may be connected and i'd get my wifi connection back, but sadly not.
I have tried right-click and 'repair' on the wireless network connection, but it comes back with the same error message in the balloon off the wireless network icon, and that it cannot repair as the network connection is unavailable.
Can anyone help please?
Many thanks

If it was encrypted, check that the network key on the PC matches the one in the router, by connecting with a wired, and going to http://192.168.2.1

Hi albertross
Encrypted? Is that the same as secured (ie wep)?? If so, then no, it wasnt encrypted.
I clicked on both the links in your post - the 192 link I cant access in either firefox or IE, the second I can access ok
Thanks

Is that because you aren't plugged into the router atm?
yes encrypted = secured with wep or wpa, unencrypted is bad:eek:
Can you scan for networks with Belkin or windows softwareEver get the feeling you are wasting your time? :rolleyes:0 -

I'm plugged into the modem, but not the router. The router is switched on.
Do I need to attach the modem to the router??
(I realise I must sound like a complete dimwit - I can only apologise)

To get to 192.168.2.1 you need to connect the PC to the router, if you have a second ethernet cable, you can connect the router to cable modem to maintain the internet connection
You may have to do a
start run cmd
ipconfig /release
ipconfig /renew
when switching between the 2
if prompted for a router username and passwd, leave blankEver get the feeling you are wasting your time? :rolleyes:0 -

Can right click the wifi icon and 'view available wireless networks' - which comes up as 'no wireless networks were found in range'.A Fendi Baguette is not a sandwich.....

Id hook it up to the router with an ethernet cable, and check that the ssid is being broadcast, and wireless is still enabled.
Having it unsecured means that anyone in range could have been playing with the settings. It could also be bust, fortunately Belkin's have a lifetime guarantee if that was the case.Ever get the feeling you are wasting your time? :rolleyes:0 -

The modem is connected to my lappy via usb - when I connect the ethernet cable to the lappy from the router I cant access the net. When its connected to the modem it doesnt recognise its connected.
'ipconfig/release' and 'ipconfig/renew' - I know theyre net provider configuration but dont understand release or renew. Switching between the 2 - ????
