Cable wifi connection died mid-post - unable to reconnect????

Try installing this, and doing a scan.
http://www.netstumbler.com/downloads/
Does it find any networks?
Did you check to see if your wireless was switched on, on the laptop?Ever get the feeling you are wasting your time? :rolleyes:0 -
Excuse the interruption, but can I suggest a simpler cause and fix might help?
You originally stated that your wireless connection had been working fine since November, and then suddenly died. When you searched, there were no wireless networks to connect to.
This is a common problem with some wireless routers. The fix is to simply turn off both router and laptop for 60 seconds or so, then power up the router again. Once it has finished booting, turn on the laptop. More than 9 times out of 10, you will find that your wireless connection is working again.
My apologies if you have already tried this.0 -

I was in the middle of a post when I lost connection to the router, so I thought this would mean the wireless is switched on - ?
I've selected 'properties' of the router connection and asked windows to repair the connection but it says it cant - other that this I dont know how to check if its switched on.
Re the netstumbler - Do I need to plug the ethernet cable into the router and then run it?? I have the modem attached to the lappy at the mo not the router so I can post.
Many thanks

you can run netstumbler without touching any wires, I am just trying to ascertain whether your laptop can see any wireless networks at all, either yours or a neighbours, to see if your PC's wireless is working. It is strange that you can't see anything when you are doing a scan, unless you live in a country house, far away from other wireless networks.Ever get the feeling you are wasting your time? :rolleyes:0

I know, I used to see mine and a very feint other. As far as I can tell its doesnt look for networks when I ask it to, it goes to 'no networks available' I live in a busy town, next to a city.
I've double clicked on the netstumbler icon, across the bottom it says 'no ap's active' next to a little flashing netstumbler icon, next it says 'gps disabled'.
The scanning icon in the toolbar is de-pressed - as is 'auto reconfigures card for scanning' and 'enable sounds'. I dont think its scanning but i'm leaving it open at the moment.
Many thanks

Have you checked for a switch or kb combination on the laptop to make sure that the wireless device is on? (I suspect if it wasn't it would have shown up by now, but you need to make sure).
Are the lights on the router all on? (wireless light?)?
Running out of ideas now, apart from to reset the router (which would lose all your isp settings).Ever get the feeling you are wasting your time? :rolleyes:0 -
The original 'rthdcpl.exe illegal system dll relocation' error message was a screw-up by Microsoft, contained in one of their regular updates. It particularly affected some PC with real-tek audio drivers. They have released info, and links to a hotfix at

More detailed explanation from affected users at

It seems a bit of a long shot, but perhaps this has caused your wireless adaptor to die? I would try applying the hotfix from the MS link and see if that works. If no joy with that, you could try uninstalling your wireless network adaptor via Device manager and then reboot the laptop. Windows will automatically reinstall the wireless adaptor on reboot. You will then need to reconfigure the wireless adaptor to talk to the router (scan for networks, enter WEP or WPA key).0 -

Cant find any external switches on my lappy other than battery compartment etc.
Lights on the router are on - power on, wlan on, connected light on and flashing and when I connect the modem one of the lan lights goes on.
I've switched the router off and on to clear it - it that the same as resetting?
Many thanks

Gonna have a look through links above - and no doubt ask further questions!
Many thanks
