Orange BB speed issue!?

Hi

I have Orange BB over a BT line (no LLU service at the exchange). I have just had the BT telephone connection to the house moved over to a new pair from the box 50 yards down the road as I had a noise and crossed line problem on the phone line and thought this was causing the BB slow speeds I have always had.

However, now on any internet based tests I still only get less than 2 mbps on a wired connection to a PC to a Netgear router to the master socket (same as before new phone pair installed).

My Netgear DG834G, however, claims to show a download speed of 5.8 mbps

So, firstly, why should the router be showing 5 mbps when any internet test gives less than 2mbps?

Also, if I moved to BT broadband would their exchange equipment give me a better speed than Orange or is this actually exactly the same gear, as it is not Orange LLU kit??

I don't want to move over to BT only to get the same speed as I do from Orange!?

Any help in improving my Orange BB speed welcomed!

TIA

Vigman

PS The Openreach engineer said that with the distance to my house, I should get up to 38 mbps on BT Broadband!

38MBps would be on a fibre connection only.
Orange no longer offers LLU, it runs over the BT network.

I get this with the BT wholesale BB checker, so it looks like my service is limited to 2mbps but I could get (buy?) a faster service??

    TIA

"Your exchange is ADSL enabled, and our initial test on your line indicates that your line should be able to have an ADSL broadband service that provides a fixed line speed up to 2Mbps.

Our test also indicates that your line currently supports an estimated ADSL Max broadband line speed of 8Mbps; typically the line speed would range between 7Mbps and 8Mbps.

Our test also indicates that your line should be able to have an ADSL2+ broadband service that provides a fixed line speed up to 2Mbps.

Our test also indicates that your line currently supports an estimated ADSL2+ broadband line speed of 19Mbps; typically the line speed would range between 16.5Mbps and 21Mbps. Our test also indicates that your line could support an estimated ADSL 2+ Annex-M broadband upstream line speed of 1.5Mbps and downstream line speed of 19Mbps; typically the downstream speed would range between 16.5Mbps and 21Mbps."

    Post your line stats here

That should show what the real situation is - they may be capping your speed.

Why is the Noise Margin so high? And the attenuation? Jeez! Do you live right next door to the exchange?

With that attenuation and a normal 6dB SNR you should be getting the full boona line speed - 24meg on ADSL2+.

I bet that this is actually Orange 'Free' Broadband - remember that you get what you pay for!

Yes, very near the Exchange...150 yds approx......in fact the BT junction box in my street carrying my pair underground and then up the pole near the house is about the same distance or further away!!

I can't ever increase the 1.21 mbps at the desktop I usually get when wired to the router and main socket even though the router is claiming 5.8 mbps download speeds!?

As I say, Orange claim I should be getting 8mbps

Any other thoughts..(especially on the router speed vs the actual desktop speed)??

    TIA

    Just got this from http://www.speedtester.bt.com/:

Download speed achieved during the test was - 1.14 Mbps
For your connection, the acceptable range of speeds is 0.4 Mbps-2 Mbps.
    Additional Information:
    Your DSL Connection Rate :5.57 Mbps(DOWN-STREAM), 0.45 Mbps(UP-STREAM)
IP Profile for your line is - 1.25 Mbps

So why clobbered to 2mbps when Orange claim up to 8 mbps should be my service?????

    TIA
