Booked Splat in for spay

Splat's booked in next Wednesday for her spay! I know she'll be in good hands but I'm getting worried already :(

Can anyone tell me their experiences with taking their little ones in for this? The receptionist asked me to give her no food after 9pm the night before, but she can have water until she comes in. Splat normally eats her food throughout the night so I hope she'll be ok with that!

I have to get her to the vet for 10am, and they reckon Ill be collecting her about 4.30pm - what can i expect?

  • My girl cat was spayed when she came to me, so I don't know about the actual spaying, but my boy cat has been under anaestic (sp?) a few times. The first time was when he got his bits done, and he was a bit sleepy for the rest of the day and didn't much of an appetite for a few hours (woke me up at 2 am though demanding the dinner he didn't eat). He's since been under anaestic a couple more times for tests, but it's been for brief periods and afterwards he's been the same as after any other vet visit.

The vet gave me special food for Jasper after he got done, as his stomach might be a bit sensitive and I was told to give him a little often. Other then that, there wasn't much else, just keep an eye on him and let them know if there was anything I was concerned about.

I'm sure Splat'll be fine, it's a quick op that the vets do all the time and I don't think it's a big incision at all and they're only asleep for about 30 mins.

Poor Splat ( love the name), she'll just have to manage no food at night. maybe treat her to some of her favourite food and she will eat most of it there and then?

I'm not sure what animal Splat is, I miss a lot on here, but having had a few dogs done, they recovered remarkably quickly. A bit dopey after the op and a bit uncomfortable, but by the next day, they always seemed to be a lot perkier and by day 3, back to their normal selves. I always found a bit of chicken and plenty of cuddles along with following the vets post-op advice, worked out just fine.
  • Thanks for the replies!

Bailey101 - Splat hates the vet, but once home normally she's fine as if she's never been! She's been for her vaccines, nail clipping (couldn't possibly do it ourselves, even the vet said don't dare try do it ourselves as she's a tiger when it comes to it! Said she's never seen a reaction like it) and another visit as she had blood in her poop a couple of weeks ago! She hisses and growls like a dog, swipes out and really hates the vets!!

bugslet - Splat is a 25 n half week old kitten! :) I am taking her in on the Wednesday and I have the Wednesday and Thursday off work and then just a half day on the Friday afternoon (as long as she is well of course)

  • I recently had both of my female cats spayed and they both did fine. Wookie (long haired tortie) was back to herself very quickly, however Rover (short haired tabby) reacted very strangely to the anaesthetic. She would stare at nothing for literally ten minutes solid, walk two or three steps and then go back to staring again. She would also chase things that weren't there. She was like that for a few days, we were concerned as Wookie was absolutely fine at this point so went back to the vets with her. They checked her over and there was nothing wrong at all, she just must have felt the painkillers and anesthetic more than your average cat.

Be prepared for her to stagger around drunkenly for a while, try not to allow her to climb anything, Wookie nearly brained herself trying to jump on the sofa (she's not the moist intelligent or graceful of cats, bless her) and if you're concerned whizz her up the vets.

I did notice a personality change in Rover after she was fixed though, she was so much more affectionate with myself and the family but she seemed to fall out with Wookie. They're not nearly as playful or friendly toward each other than they used to be. Wookie is still the same old affectionate, dim witted fluffball that she always was but Rover now hisses if she comes too close to her, they used to be very close previously. We're still not sure why this is...

Anyway, I'm sure Splat will be fine! It's a routine op after all. Let us know how she fares hwith the drugs, I'm not going to lie, seeing two kitties drunkenly stoned out of their minds stagger around my house amused me far too much. Bad cat momma!

She will probably shout at you for food! :p You might calm her down a little with claw clipping by doing clicker training, train her just to briefly contact your hand with her paw (shake hands/ gimme paw) then slowly to actually let you touch or hold it. You should be able to find some YouTube videos.

    splat will be fine.
all the dogs and cats have been done and been okay. probably be a bit offish/woozy from the op. the vet will advise about feeding for the first night and next day, but things will probably need to be kept quiet until the stictes out and area healed, incl no or as little man-handling (for any little people about) or too much jumping about for splat.
the personalities do change i noticed too. it can calm animals down, ive noticed it made the boy cats more home loving and affecionate.
    good luck.

PLEASE ensure she doesn't eat as there is a risk (albeit small) that she could choke during the operation as the all muscles relax (including the one that holds their stomach shut).
other than that she'll be just fine.
the vet will have about three other people in the operating theatre with him/her including the anaesthetist and nurses. it's just like human operations you see on TV.
Splat will (as everyone else says) be very woozy and sleepy for the rest of the day but she'll be fine. listen carefully to the instructions that the vet gives you when you colelct Splat. they may also give you a leaflet to read as well/instead. follow the instructions on the leaflet and ask if you aren't sure.
it'll take about a week or so for her to start 'missing her hormones' but it's more noticable in dogs than in cats.
you'll need to take her back after about 10 days to have her stitches out and the vet nurse will do that for you.

  • Unlike a female dog which needs to be walked only on a lead for several days after, the cat spay is totally different, and the very great majority will leap out of their basket once they get home and demand food.

We have honestly had over 10,000 spays done in the last 20 years, and it is a very straightforward operation.

  • Thank you to everyone for your reassurances! I know long term its for the best for her! Shame it feels so cruel purposefully putting her under the knife!!

  • The flat feels so empty and lonely :(

Poor lil splat was starving this morning but was the most cuddliest she has been for ages!
Im off work this week as I've got kidney stone issues, managed to go out to take splat, she was her usual self at the vet hissing etc so was hard to walk away! She has put on more weight too, she is 26 weeks on friday and weighs 2.75kg!

sorry for my rambling im just going out of my mind
