He might not, I've no idea of his situation apart from the bit I heard when sat next to him with my own advisor. However you can't assume that everyone is capable of doing a 6 mile round trip by walking.
If it was me in that situation (I'm early 20's and fairly fit) I would have no problems. Plenty of others would struggle.0 -

I outlined the various stages, backwards, in an earlier thread (2 or 3 pages ago), that have happened to me, but I have never been officially sanctioned. You can be 'sanctioned', for being late for a signing on, or failing to attend dole skool, or repeatedly making excuses not to turn up for interviews, but not an official sanction.
The 'training', they provide, in this day and age, you probably know more than them, but there is no pass/fail exam, they just guide you, and when I'm there I do more work to help others than the staff do; However judging on the responses contained within this thread, but there are a lot more that seem to suggest, there is a new system, how do I dodge it?
If you are looking for a job legit, then no problem, apart from the cookie tracking system, this system is to weed out the people that keep making lame excuses as to why not to embrace the new system.
I'll tell you why it's might become mandatory - because the core system isn't transferred over properly yet, somebody mentioned 1st March? Like Digital TV text was good, dropped the Ceefax core, and now it's rubbish, they both need work.
I've signed on today, and Gateway wasn't mentioned, although they treated me funny last time, because I complained to my MP about the bullying state we now live in.
If you sign into the Gateway system, show me how to stop them sending unsolicited emails to me, no DSS access, and the email that sends the emails to me blocked. But I STILL GET THEM!!!!
Surely people receiving these random emails saying there is a job in London, when you live in Scotland, if the people unemployed made a FB group to share that, then the right job would go to the right area. I don't know how to do that. I fix computer hardware, not software. Anyone remember dBASE, Pascal, or WordStar? I'm expert at those.
If you don't like what the DSS are doing - with this Gateway system; it's basically a jobpoint with all data removed (even their servers are corrupt),
SO LOG ON to it, and provide all information, CV's, emails, FB Twitter, it takes it all, and sends it on to the employer.
Or say LOG ON, but no details to dole, please don't contact me in future..
THEY STILL send the emails - and you cannot stop the spam.0 -

No, I didnt tick the box because they cant force you to give them access. Thats why they want the email address, so the system can check that a UJM account has been set up using that email account, thats how they verify you have signed up. The system doesnt seem to work though and no doubt JCP will assume we are all lying about having registered, rather than think the system is faulty.0 -
I was at the job centre yesterday, and UJM is done my Monster Jobs (explains a lot about the number of agencies on it). When it was first set up, the system caved under the number of people going onto it to register. Then there was an increase in the number of people forgetting their log in details/ their log in details not working. UJM is now sending out e-mails to those who have tried to contact them about the problem and given some information on how to fix it. THis is as below.
Case reference: Jobseeker Access Incident
You recently contacted the Universal Jobmatch Helpdesk regarding your Government Gateway / Universal Jobmatch account.
You told us:
You have a user id and password problem which is preventing you from getting in to the account you set up on Universal Jobmatch.
The following instructions will help you to correct this.
Start here:
The Universal Jobmatch service uses your email address as part of the secure verification process and will not allow it to be reused. Therefore the service will not allow you to set up a new account using an email address that has been used before in Universal Jobmatch.
The Universal Jobmatch service has recognised that this may cause problems for some people. The service now runs a regular ‘fix’ within three weeks of this mail that clears the email addresses of people like you who have told us they cannot get into the service. All people who have reported this problem will receive an email notification advising when the ‘fix’ is about to take place. If you have taken option one below you can ignore that email notification.
You now have two choices:
One:
If you have a different email address available, or can set up a different email address, you may setup a new user id on the service now by starting the new registration process again.
Your new account on Universal Jobmatch must use this different email address.
When you have created your new account you can ignore the email notification described above.
(Please note: The DWP cannot advise you on creating a new different email address as there are numerous providers on the internet that can assist you with this).
Two:
You can continue using the service using the standard jobsearch which does not need you to log in to your account.
When you receive the email notification described above you can set up a new user id on the service by starting the registration process again and reuse your existing email address.
When you set up your new account it is important that you look for the verification email from gateway.confirmation@gateway.gov.uk in your email account (check your spam folders too) and take the option to verify your email. This will allow you to recover your user id or reset your password in the future.
You can e-mail them on the address below if you haven't if you have problems.

If you have issues about the system, as well as complaining on here, complain to them, e-mail them and let them know of the issues, like the number of agencies. I don't think that they actually have any control over what goes on there, and it up dates instantly, so if you want a job on, you tell them at 9 am and by 9.05 it's on. This also means that jobs come and go on it, as many employers cut off after so many people have applied. This means in theory you should check it every hour or so!!!! You can also put on a CV, but don't put personal details eg address / e-mail on the one that is public, if an employer is interested, they can contact you through UJM.
Anyway, I need to apply for at least one job a day so I had better get on with it.0 -
Then you obviously gave them a fake email address. durr...
Gotta be careful when posting, as many people have ulterior motives.
Nope, didn't give fake anything. What are you insinuating?
I just checked my account (profile page) and the boxes 'I authorise DWP to view my account, including job search activity, feedback and notes' and 'I would like to receive DWP email messages' are NOT ticked.- seems to work for me0 -

Well that's very interesting as it raises a couple issues.
1. Receiving benefit (JSA) is not conditional on providing an e-mail address, so anyone is well withing their right to refuse to supply an e-mail address. That pretty much stops their check procedure in its tracks.
2. Being able to check whether a person is signed up to UJM by only having to search an e-mail address is contrary to the Data Protection Act because the use of UJM is not limited to those claiming benefits, anyone (who has a gateway account) can use it. For example, I might know someone's e-mail address - a business colleague for example - and could then find out if they are signed up to UJM, totally in contravention of their right to privacy under the DPA.
Are you absolutely sure that this is how they check that you are signed up to Jobmatch?0 -

I had the same thing happen to me last week. The woman checked if I was registered using the email on my cv and I could see on the screen that it stated the email wasn't registered. I then gave her the email I used to register as I wasn't quite sure which one I'd used and it stated that I'd registered but not given access.
Don't most websites that require a login, ask for your email if you've lost your password and say on screen that either an email to reset the password has been sent, or that there isn't an account for that email? Surely it's the same thing? There's a storm coming, Mr Johnson. You and your friends better batten down the hatches, because when it hits, you're all gonna wonder how you ever thought you could live so large and leave so little for the rest of us.0
