Wee rant about Wetherspoons and proof of age!

I went with friend who is 35 and looks it...still ID'd........
I gave them my NUS extra card, was fine...I wouldn't carry around my passport or driving licence into a pub or a club - that's just asking for trouble.
I hate Weatherspoons, they are pubs with no soul.Hi, we’ve had to remove your signature. If you’re not sure why please read the forum rules or email the forum team if you’re still unsure - MSE ForumTeam0 -

A provisional or a passport doesn't cost too much and, whether or not they *should* accept other sorts of card, they *will* accept a passport pretty much anywhere.
That being the case, the easiest (nb...I'm not saying it's the best) way to sort the problem would be for the bf to get a passport...So, I don't think CR asking why it wasn't a financial option was particularly offensive...
(and, as he said, you need one to go overseas, which the OPs bf will know, and which, as you so rightly spotted, isn't mandatory...it just means that *if*, shockingly, OPs bf decides to go overseas (his choice! he won't be forced!) in the life of the passport, he won't have to pay for it - so it can be looked at as "money he'd spend anyway". Which is fair enough.)
Ok I'll spell out the part of the post I had a problem with:
"how come your fiancee cant afford a drivers licence or a passport, does he not work"
The reasons why he can't afford them have got nothing to do with anyone apart from him and the OP0 -

If pubs are claiming to have seen forgeries of these cards, don't you think that it would have been reported somewhere along the line to the enforcing body?!
why would kids trying to get a drink or crim's trying to make money care about that? it's like saying the thing is it's agaisnt the law to steal things then be really shocked that there are teaf's about..... and you work for trading standerds? If i upset you don't stress, never forget that god aint finished with me yet.0 -
I nearly got refused service in a Wetherspoons and I'm 27 - I don't drive and being 9 years over the legal age I don't bring my passport on a night out with me, so I didn't have ID. In the end I showed her my wedding ring and my husband vouched for me and she (very reluctantly) served me.
I understand that barmen get fined and so do the pubs, but it really annoys me that I have been legally allowed to drink for nine years and still could be refused! I'm responsible enough to be in charge of 30 children all day but not to buy a bottle of beer.0 -

Yes, I do work for Trading Standards. And of course kids won't care, but that doesn't mean that incidents where so called "fakes" are presented should not be reported by the licensee or the licensing officer.
The laws are there for a reason.0 -
Our local wetherspoons is a bit funny about id too.... My mate is going out with a girl whos 19, and looks it. A couple of weeks ago, they ID' her when she went to get a drink, she didnt have anything on her so they wouldnt serve her (fair enough, she wasnt too bothered...) However, they then wouldnt serve ANY of us on our table. Im 32 for god sake, I really dont need to be not allowed to buy myself a drink anymore...You lied to me Edward. There IS a Swansea. And other places.....
*I have done reading too*

Sure they can but if they refuse to serve everybody, they won't have much of a business.
I agree about places not accepting anyone who seems threatening or drunk already but normal people???
I have just spent a week in England touring and found everywhere to have notices everywhere - are they being petty or are the English just needing to be told what to do all the time?
We didn't goto a Wetherspoons either, as there are plenty of other places to go.
I am English btw and living in Scotland. An average day in my life:hello: :mad: :coffee::coffee::coffee::T:rotfl: :rotfl:

I used to be a doorman - once I asked a girl for ID and she did not have any so I would not let her in. Her mates all rounded on me saying - it's no fair for that lassie she always gets asked for proof of age. Well Doh:rotfl:
I got asked well into my 20s.The truth may be out there, but the lies are inside your head. Terry Pratchett
