My local student bar is really funny, again they let public in, but 2 months ago I went in with a 16 year old friend(im 24) on my course, I wanted a alcoholic drink as did another friend who was 19, now we had ID, and were buying a pint of lager each, and my friend who even ADMITTED he was 16 and all he wanted was a glass of coke made the barmaid turn all 3 of us away, even though I said "look hes said hes 16, and all he wants is a glass of coke" she said she cant serve any of us as we can pass him a drink, then stitting at table was a woman with 3 kids! she got served fine!

We went to Wetherspoons and got served fine, which again is local non ID place where everyone even 16 year olds get served.

Heres a funny story, im an ex major holiday park employee(dont know if im allowed to say their name) and when I worked on site, I used to see loads of kids as young as 10 drunk all the time, getting parents to buy them drinrk, once I saw a girl, looked about 10 walk up to bar, and wanted a pint, the barman said he couldnt serve her, it had to be parents, her dad came up bought it, and sat it down in front of her and she downed it in about 3 minutes!

And the girls that young were covered in make up and short skirts and low cut tops as there was a gymnastics competition on

He's out of work at the moment and trying to find a job. Not entitled to benefits and I am in debt, so money is very tight. Needless to say, since neither of us can afford a passport it'll be a good while before we can even consider holidays abroad!

    He doesn't drive either.

Our local Spoons is actually quite an oldies pub and not licenced for under 18s at all, not a great pub really just cheap and they sell that nice cider! We'll just carry on going elsewhere, I guess it's one of those things, but it's a bit annoying.

    I've been Money Tipped!
I know what thats like, but I cant even afford to buy alcohol(yet my flatmate with the full £45 a week benefit moans about being skint) as I get £28 week from Jobcentre, then I have Council Tax to pay, electric to pay, which comes to about £12 a week, then council wants £10 a week as they overpaid me last year when I signed on by £600 around that much anyway, leaving me with £6 a week, and no one at benefit services cares.

And im only getting £28 a week due to me leaving college and getting £250 in a grant sent a month in arrears which the jobcentre says counts as income!

Driving licenses and passports are not compulsory and quite a lot of young people don't have them even though they are over 18, so there does need to be a more readily available form of 'proof of age' for use in clubs and pubs etc. Not sure I would take my passport to a club anyway! Also, I know a lot of people who still have the old style paper driving license. Luckily, they don't get asked for proof of age that often LOL. As for Wetherspoons educating their staff, I guess it happens somewhere.
  • The problem is, the fines for serving someone underage are amazingly high - it's £80 on the spot fine for the bar associate alone, let alone the Pub Manager(s) and them company themselves (their fines could run into thousands!).

Also, another thing which needs to be taken into account, is the fact that in heavily-student populated towns and cities, there is more of a risk of forgery and faking some cards, including the hologram-pass ones. Quite often, these are the pubs who will refuse the accept the card.

Of course, I agree that if the pub in question is offering the special leaflets, they should be accepting the Citizencard themselves! I bet their Area Manager doesn't know they've been refusing it... hee hee!

Anyway, I'd be flattered if someone asked me to prove my age! :rotfl:

No chances of that happening, though.....

No, there are no known incidents of faked PASS hologram cards. There are definitely some bad fake ID cards out there, but staff can be trained very easily to spot the difference very fast! I've been to national conferences on ID and PASS cards and have the facts on forgeries, sadly the pub don't seem to want to listen to that.

And nobody would get a fine if they had acted with due diligence and checked ID, and were able to be satisfied that the ID shown was reasonable.

Wish they'd ask me to prove my age too but sadly nobody has for ages!

I'm sorry, but that comment up there ^^ just really tee'd me off.
What business is of yours why her fiancee can't afford a passport or driving licence?
Also since when has it been mandatory to travel abroad? I'm pretty sure he's aware of that fact that he would need a passport should he ever wish to travel overseas

Just a little bit of perspective, irrespective of what id you carry they do not have to allow you in unless THEY are satisfied .. if they err on the side of caution it is actually something that is to be welcomed.

I last got refused entry when I was 26 in America ... the strange thing was that to hire a car I had to be 21, the place refused entry to anybody under 21 but they willingly returned my hire car to me (from valet parking) after turning me away. It's best not attempting to apply logic to these situations :D
