Keeping on top of the washing!

You should leave enough space to be able to do a 'thumbs-up' on top of the washing. Any fuller than that and the washing won't move around/agitate as much.I imagine I'm being stupid here, but what's the thumbs up method? I have a bad habit of just stuffing the washing machine full, so I'd be interested if there's a general rule for filling it.0 -
Oh washing is actually the most depressing thing for me and I just can't get on top of it! I have the boiler cupboard full of clothes and just can't get through them! It'll get to the point where I send it off to the laundrette to wash and dry. For £40. Again. I can sympathise lol
There are 5 of us here, and dd doesn't keep too well, most days we have an accident out of one end or the other so obviously anything that is dirtied in that respect gets washed straight away.
Then we have school clothes, clubs clothes, towels, bedding etc
Machine is on at least twice a day and I still can't move the mountain!

Oh you'd love my friend Al. He went over 18 months without washing his jeans. Apparently it was the 'in thing' to keep pots of vaseline or a phone in the back pocket until the shape of the item wore into the jeans, and washing them was a no go.
I nagged him consistently for about 12 months. It was only when he got stupidly drunk at the end of year party (students) and threw up down his leg he conceded defeat.
He was sort of right though, jeans don't need to be washed anywhere near as often as we do:

I dont have a tumble drier but after a wash I put the load on for an extra spin or two and that gets rid of loads of excess water. Makes drying clothes, towels and bedding so much quicker. The best day of your life is the one on which you decide your life is your own, no apologies or excuses. No one to lean on, rely on or blame. The gift is yours - it is an amazing journey - and you alone are responsible for the quality of it. This is the day your life really begins.0

I'm not obsessive or compulsive, just like to put clean clothes on in the morning. I can't see the point of having a shower and putting "dirty" clothes back on again. I don't think there's anything obsessive with wanting to feel clean and surely I'm not the only person who puts clean clothes on every day!
EDIT: Just realised my post might have read as if I do stay up til the wee small hours scrubbing clothes by hand. I don't! (I have a washer). But I would if that was the only way I could have clean clothes every morning.0 -
I do bed linen once a month, I save it up to get a machine full. I also lob knickers/socks into that.
I do a coloureds/jeans wash once a month, I also lob knickers/socks into that.
I do a whites wash - everything that's white - once every 2-3 months because I've not got much that's white so tend not to use/wear white things on the basis it'll take ages to collect a machine full.
I do towels once a month. I might lob jeans in there too.
Generally .... a machine is on about once a week.
Although I am about to move into a place without a machine, so it's back to handwashing for me!0 -
A recent study said that jeans don't need to be washed, so long as they're not stained badly .... just hang them up and they're almost self-cleaning.18 months:eek:I wouldn't wear them more than 1/2 weeks without washing them and if something were to spill on the jeans well immediately, 18 months:eek:0
