You make a good point about the ring pulls SailorSam. After my frustrations with tin openers, I've started to actually look at which cans do and don't have ring pulls fitted. I'm going to see if I can try and buy more like that, as long as they don't cost anymore that is.
Thanks to all the people who have posted here with their experiences over the last few days. I hope alot of us can find this thread useful, both now and in the futue.0 -

After trying cheap and expensive butterfly types I found a P38 (US army) type to be faultless so far. There is also a larger version-P51. These are really simple, works EVERY time. Also dead easy to keep clean, no more black gunge! amazon.co.uk

I think that's the same that I have. I've had it for years and bought it from an army surplus store. I would definitely recommend that one as well.0 -

Drinks cans and tinned peas are one thing, but good old corned beef continues to be a cut finger magnet however they pack it!0 -

I so agree with you on this A. Badger. I hate the "key" corned beef cans - it's nearly always a fight to get in. I've cut or nicked mysef so many times that I now open a corned beef tin with thick rubber gloves on. I've recently bought some that have a ring pull but I don't expect it to be an easy experience either. I think it's all about the shape of the can being so different to something like soup.
Surely there's got to be a better way to open a tin of corned beef?!! There's a question for those of you with electric can openers, can it handle a corned beef tin too?0 -
I am glad its not just me who has difficulty opening a can,am always wary a my mum cut her hand badly and had a scar as a reminder
Also I can be both left or right handed so nearly every can ends up as a mess
The old ikea black butterfly type were good however the new ones aint

have just bought a 'catania' can opener from the poundshop two weeks ago, it looks like one of the £5 types (but I paid £1!), thought it might be risky but worth a try and have been happy with it so far, find it easy to use, so fingers crossed...0

I agree. I splashed out on a Kuhn Rikon. I can confirm that it is totally ineffectual on nearly every can, but works like a dream on about one can in twenty, which is okay if you have the time to mess around. Mine's hardly ever used and I too use the 'butterfly' ones.
I bought a cheap version of a Kuhn Rikon from Wilkinsons and it didn't even pierce the tin, completely useless. I assumed it was really my own fault for taking the cheap route but after reading what you and A.Badger have said I am happy I didn't splash out on the Kuhn Rikon. I am back to a butterfly tin opener which, although not perfect by any means is at least more reliable and works most of the time.'Look after the pennies and the pounds will look after themselves'0
