Broken Mobile - Claim on house insurance?

-
A public forum on a top-ranked website is definitely the best place for discussing insurance fraud...
That's not sarcastic?
I did not take out the policy with British Gas, I did not commit fraud I'll thank you very much - I had already been with them for four years. Their engineer advised me during a visit that people are able to do that; I mentioned that our dishwasher was on the blink and that I needed to find out if appliances were included in the policy (drains and pipes are) and I wasn't sure if it was the pipes or the appliance. He explained that if I took out the appliance cover I could then claim. I didn't go into that much detail in my previous post because I didn't think it was relevant, but I also didn't say that I took the policy out upon his reccommendation. Jeez!0 -
Youve commited fraud already with British Gas,
thats a bit of a wild are serious allegation you are throwing there, where exactly has the OP commited fraud against british gas?I thought it would work the same way British Gas do - when we had a problem with the boiler they advised taking a maintenance contract out that day (thus being tied in for 12 months) and would cover the cost of repairs/services, etc. I didn't think it would be different for insurance.
how exactly is this fraud? i know the product OP is refering to, as i have used it in the past aswell, your boiler breaks, you call them, they replace/repair it and the poilcy starts from there...0 -
I appreciate everybody's post pointing out that I am (unwittingly) discussing insurance fraud. I am not asking for anyone to help me commit insurance fraud, I simply did/do not know how it worked which is why I came on here to ask. I am not asking you to drive the getaway vehicle. I'd have worn a balaclava if I thought I'd be incriminating myself.0

OP - do you have any cover with your bank account - long shot but worth checking?

I don't think so but I'll check thanks0

If you don't want to wade through your home insurance policy, why not phone them (the insurance company) up and ask them:
1/ Do you have cover for accidental damage?
2/ If so, does it cover mobile phones and broken screens?
3/ If so, how much is the excess on this policy?
4/ If excess is not too high, will claiming on it result in a premium increase next year?
Then you will know for certain if this is a possibility.
Other options might be buy a new phone - you can get very nice android phones for around £50 or so. If a cheaper phone breaks after a year or two, it doesn't hurt so much.
You can consider selling the broken phone on ebay (clearly describing its damage). Perhaps someone out there wants one and can fix it, so you may get something for it.0 -
OP - I think its a bit out of order for you to moan at the sarcasm you got. yes, some of the replies here have been sarcastic, etc... but come on, what did you expect? In your very first post you asked if people thought you should commit fraud!! You might claim you are unaware this is illegal, but at the very least you must know it is morally wrong, right? Why do you think insurance cost are so high for everyone???!
As others have said, don't bother claiming on house insurance for the sake of £150, unless you have accidental damage/cover for items outside the home, etc... (which I suspect you don't, if you're not familiar with insurance cover).
I doubt you'd want a cheap android phone as the last poster suggested - hardly a replacement for an S3. I'd get the phone fixed then consider getting mobile insurance for future (legal) cover.0 -

If your not asking about committing fraud why are you talking about taking out insurance and claiming for something that you know is already broken?
Why not ring up and advise you want to take out insurance and claim on something that is already broken if that's how you believed it worked.0 -

I am sure they will repair it at cost and then offer you insurance after that.
Do you will really believe that British gas will allow you take out insurance on say a 1000 boiler after its failed. They would hardly be in business if they did?
Do some people understand how insurance works.
What the OP is talking about as said in the opening post is taking out insurance after somethings breaks and claiming for it within a few days of the policy starting.
Also insurers are not always that stupid and will tend to investigate claims made within a short time of the policy starting.0
