ios6 charges on Orange - anyone else?

  1. Had a text from Orange today to say my bill was due - went on line to check it and received a huge shock to see my bill was over £300!! Phoned Orange as I was sure there must have been a mistake made only to be told it wasn't a mistake but that it was probably due to the ios6 updgrade and that I would have to pay it. I only ever do my updates on my phone, I wasn't even aware you could do it any other way. Naive of me perhaps, but surely Orange or Apple should have made us aware of the amount of data the update would use. Has anyone else had this problem? I can't afford £300 in one go and I don't know what to do about it. Any help gratefully received.

    Many thanks

  • you didnt do it through wifi? im sure all updates come with a warning telling you it would be better to do it over wifi before u start

  • I thought it did go through wifi because I was at home at the time and we have wifi for our laptop. I certainly don't remember anything popping up. It just said do you want to update or whatever it says and I said yes. I'm not great at technical stuff, but I have done all the other upgrades and not had a problem which is why I am so shocked about this one. I just don't know what I can do about it apart from pay up which I can't afford to do all in one go. I can spread it over six months, but wont be able to make any outgoing calls........

AFAIK, it is some well documented problem resulting from upgrading to iOS6.

You need consider whether the phone is set up to switch to wifi at home and when you did the update whether it downloaded via wifi or not.

The Internet has a fair few threads with regards to people having problems like you. I would therefore turn off your data on your phone if you haven't done so already.

There is a suggestion that whilst the phone should default to wifi where possible it is using the mobile data in error and this causing people to suffer massive bills
  • Thank you both for your help. I will change my settings and complain to Orange and hope for the best. Guess that's all I can do.

    Harsh lesson to learn :(
