  • But how is your A level person going to get a Manager's job if you come up against a person with a nice polished MBA when your MBAer will know all the fancy management stuff and your A leveler won't?

It's totally dependent on the company and the job you are going for. Someone who has worked their way up also shows dedication and if the basic qualities are there, training can fill in the gaps. Sadly a lot of theories usually stay as theories as many companies are just not geared up to change at that level.

The question is, do you want to be a good manager ie organising how to get things done and carrying out the strategy or do you want to become a leader? My personal feeling is that an MBA is more valuable if you are wanting the leader position as it makes you think more strategically. Any level of education can make a good manager though as organisational and communication skills are more important here.

Very interesting, a 16k in fees MBA must give you something, more strategic thinking then.

You want a job to bring pennies in Phil, you don't need a degree to do that do you?

Instead of sitting and mulling over what is best, why not get ANY job and then mull over what you want to do, cos sitting and mithering people ain't gonna bring a bean in is it?

From the people I know that have MBAs, it's strategic management stuff (if you do a business degree you will cover some of the stuff anyway) but it's most useful if you do it after 5 years experience or so as you can relate it much more easily to the business you're in and how you implement it.

The other important thing it gives you is contacts. These networking contacts will probably mean you get a better job in the long run meaning that £16k is well spent.

Haven't done one myself but as I'm still paying off an original student loan from 9 years ago and have a large mortgage I can only dream... Not sure I have the committment either - think the lazy gene has kicked in!
