One in the house is working, one is paid carers allowance and the other disability allowance and one has pension. The 2 boys are on JSA. Private renting a 4 bed would be more than double the rent now so not really an option.

Such is life.We are responsible for our own choices.

    I work in this area.

Why is it the councils responsibility for rehousing into a larger properties?

So only one member of the family is actually working. That will explain why the family are so desperate for a cheap house.

Sorry - if your family choose to live the way they do, they've made their choice - nobody forced them to do it and they're all at liberty to choose different accommodation arrangements.
.................:)....I'm smiling because I have no idea what's going on ...:)

You honestly don't see what is ridiculous about a bunch of fully grown adults choosing to live together in cramped conditions expecting to be given a priority that would give them a larger house?!The mind boggles!

Special needs adult and oap, that I could just about accept. To have so many is plain absurd,to be frank.

They are all capable of making their own decisions and finding places to live -it's not rocket science.Flat shares, renting rooms etc.All doable. There is no reason on earth why any local authority should agree to house them all together.

My advice would be for them to grow up and look after themselves.

Yep,families choose to have kids and I don't agree with constant breeding and asking for larger houses due to it.However, kids are brought up by their parents,it's not as if they can tell the young kids to live elsewhere is it!It's totally different

In total agreement with you SheGirl! Well said. Sorry OP but there are FAR too many people out there in real need of housing.... when the new rules come in (VERY soon) to put people onto a 5 year restricted tenancy, this situation wont be able to happen anyway! There is no reason why half of the people in that house couldnt be seeking their own accomodation and paying for it themselves. Especially the 2 "boys".... i have no problem with adult children living with parents - indeed, in the current economic climate it is often the only option BUT not if the tax payer is having to foot the bill!!! They could quite easily get out of there by putting their names down on the housing list for single person accomodation... i suggest they dont want to do this as they would certainly not have such a nice place to live etc. There are PLENTY of people their age out there, living in a rented room in a shared property - they would be able to afford this whilst earning the minimum wage..... so as a previous poster suggested, it IS a case of CHOICES.
Baldrick, does it have to be this way? Our valued friendship ending with me cutting you up into strips and telling the prince that you walked over a very sharp cattle grid in an extremely heavy hat?

It IS an option. Just not an option that they are willing to consider, evidently!

  • Oh fgs I asked for some advice on the situation not for backlash on the family's choice. You think they wanted a special needs person come live them who is very hard to look after and a oap who couldn't even afford to feed herself but it's family - yes you think they haven't tried to get the boys out into work so they can move out but we can't just leave them homeless so thanks to the person who did offer advice.

I gave advice. Go and rent privately.

Social housing won't be cheaper soon with change to Allocations. The housing will be in the lower third of average rents for that area. Look at the local housing allowance for your area.

Unfortunately people rely on the local authority to sort out housing and in some cases yes; we need to help. I enjoy the challenges. But for every genuine case you get you will see people who 'expect' you to house them when their situation has got worse because of their own choices. Living in a two bed flat joining the housing list for over crowding and having 3 more children for example. In some areas this would be deliberately worsening a housing situation and you would be removed.

Councils have their own policies and you need to read the local authority policy where you live.

But surely if this family can get a house before the changes are implemented they'll not apply? And if they are claiming HB for the rent, does it matter?
