    However, while we remain entitled and smug cyclists and hestitant and fearful motorists, we'll always be at loggerheads.

    I stop for the winter! It's called being proactively safe. I don't fancy going one on one with 3 tonnes of metal.

    There's no use in being all nice and legally correct and having your fellow cycling idiots agree with you when you lose an arm!

    So given I start work before the sun rises in both summer & winter.
    then what?

    Most drivers are fearful of cyclists: No matter how idiotic the cyclist is, no matter how blatantly a cyclist causes an accident, it's always the car driver's fault. So yes, when you have a situation where you're responsible for someone else's unpredictable actions, as I was, of course you'll hesitate.

    I've never met a "resentful" car driver... Stupid car drivers who don't pay attention, sure. There's lots of those - about as many as there are cyclists. But resentful?

    I'm not here to run your life; I'm just saying that yes, I stop during winter as a car is infinitely safer given dark and slippery conditions. If you fancy taking the risk and doing battle with motorists who already have to deal with less than ideal road conditions with the full knowledge that if anything happens, the car driver is automatically at fault, then all power to ya! I can't change the law of the land. I hope that if/when you should lose an arm because you knew better, being "right" will serve as some solace!

    British roads are not built for cyclists. Go to Amsterdam near Centrale if you would like an example. Excellent cycle lanes and the road users look out for each other properly! Not like the UK where cyclists barrel around like they're the only ones in the world!

    but you feel justified in calling me an idiot?

    I feel justified in calling a lot of cyclists idiots, yes!

    Sadly, they're not the most sensible bunch on the roads! And it really does irritate me when I use cycle lanes, travel at appropriate speeds and wait at intersections to see others just barreling through then like for some reason a red light does not apply to them.

    If that's not idiocy, then please feel free to suggest an alternative term! I'll happily stand corrected!

    How about "daredevil" or "Mr. Awesome"... or even "God"?

    Options;

    Cycle- but make sure that you have adequate front and rear lights and a rear reflector (compulsory, though with most cyclists where I live, you wouldn't have thought it), wear hi-viz or light coloured clothing and it's advisable to wear a helmet. That way if a motorist collides with you because he/she hasn't seen, you, you can blame them. Or if you don't want to risk coming into contact with afore mentioned idiot motorist, there is always the additional following options;

    Car - make sure you have your lights on (dipped headlights required) during the hours of darkness or poor visibility. Look out for idiot 'ninja' cyclists who do not have any of the above.

    Bus - Leave all RTA responsibilities to the bus driver although it is advisable to wear light coloured clothing walking to and from the bus stop.

    Walk - wear light coloured clothing and look out for idiot 'ninja' cyclists who are riding recklessly without lights and maybe riding on or accross the pavement and when crossing the road, look out for idiot motorists who may have forgotten to have switched their lights on (because they didn't read the above or thought it would make their electric bill cheaper)

    :D

    Maybe I've missed you. Are you trying to say red lights do or don't apply to you?

    Edit: AH I've just read up. I said the word idiot and cyclist in the same sentence which you have obviously taken issue with. Regardless of whether or not my intention to refer to you as an idiot was there or not, the fact that I mainly use a car for my commute and you obviously use a bike means I am instantly wrong and that I should be burned at the stake for the mere utterance of such a sentence, to which you have obviously taken grievance to.

    Wow, this is sounding familiar to me already!
