Some people always try to skate uphill. Those people shouldn't be at university if they can't fit the basic criteria. As I said, they'd be better off forgetting academia and getting a job.

Why should you be excluded from the better life chances a graduate has and to be considered less clever than someone with a degree just because their intelligence is is less geared to essay writing?

You're right, sali. When I was at uni, we had sets of lectures, but we also had a weekly tutorial in groups where we discussed. I usually got more out of the tutorials than the lectures, and it tended to spark off new directions of thought for me.

Do you go to lectures? That would be where core texts are explained or where the ideas in the texts are explored. Do you go to seminars? That is where other students go and discuss the lectures and texts with the tutor to ensure everyone understands and can bounce ideas off each other.

Try it, you might learn something

Why should university education have to be dumbed down for those square pegs stubbornly trying to fit themselves into round holes? We're not all born with equal abilities in all areas. I couldn't be a nuclear physicist so it'd be absolutely pointless my going into that kind of research. Rather than banging my fists against the door, I accepted that my skills lay in another direction. It's about being realistic about one's qualities.

!!!!!! Phil - why do you think that would be the case?

I'm not a graduate, and it's never been a disadvantage for me.

I can prove my intelligence without a piece of paper and a pile of essays!

Shouldnt this thread be placed back on track, this hasn't got anything to do with references. If we all want to talk about SP's mental deficiencies perhaps a new thread should be opened?

If I were marking academic work, I wouldn't necessarily expect X number of references per 1000 words, but I would expect to see a rigourous understanding of the subject and enough references to show wide reading and the ability to consider the topic in its context, historical and otherwise.
