Barclays Insurance in Dublin - do they have all the data still in existence?

From 1999 to 2004 (when it was fully repaid) my husband and I were paying a Barclayloan. We have the repayments on bank statements, but we can't find the original loan agreement. At the time we thought PPI was compulsory, so we think we paid PPI but have no proof. (We did have the original agreement for a Natwest loan of around the same time, it had PPI and they recently made us a refund offer.)

I went into our local branch of Barclays and asked for a copy of our loan agreement, but they told us to phone Barclays Insurance in Dublin, who could tell us if they have any record of us having PPI. They say they have nothing on file.

Is it worth making a SAR request, or would that only mean checking the same records they have in Dublin and come up with nothing?
PPI on Natwest loan, Barclayloan, MBNA credit card, and Mortgagecare all repaid just for asking in 2012/2013!

Barclaycard - PPI refund refused 26/01/13, ombudsman upheld 12 May 2014, Barclays resisted until March 2015 - FOS say Barclays are calculating an offer, they have 8 weeks.

You are not entitled to a copy of this loan agreement as you have (long since) paid it off. However, you don't need the agreement in order to complain. What you need are valid and verifiable complaint reasons. If you have these, send in your complaint!
  • Thanks. I would just feel happier making a complaint if I had a copy of the loan arrangement in front of me. I suppose it could still turn up in the loft, but it 's been a long time and sometimes I do throw things out.

Would the loan reference number that appears on my bank statement be enough information for the PPI questionnaire?

No, you'll need evidence that you actually had PPI along with valid and verifiable complaint reasons.
If you send in such a "complaint" to the Bank which has already said they can find no evidence that you had PPI then you will simply receive a rejection.

That's what I suspected would happen, which is why, in my first post, I asked if it was worth making an SAR to (hopefully) find the full details.

It occurs to me now that I only gave them (Barclays) my own name. If the PPI was in my husband's name, maybe it wouldn't come up? I think I'll probably do an SAR just to set my mind at rest. I don't want to send in a faulty PPI request that will slow down the response for everyone else.

    No you don't.
You mean send a potentially fraudulent complaint? Tell the bank that you had PPI and hope for the best?

To make a successful complaint you need to know for certain that you had PPI in order to make an honest complaint about the circumstances of the sale of it.

With advice like yours, it's no wonder that such a huge percentage of PPI complaints received by the Banks are from people who didn't even have the insurance.

That is the wisest action unless you can find some old paperwork in your own archive.

There is no requirement to ''evidence'' that you had PPI or that you have ''verifiable complaint reasons'' in order to make a compliant.

''The firm should recognise that oral evidence may be sufficient evidence and not dismiss evidence from the complainant solely because it is not supported by documentary proof. The firm should take account of a complainant’s limited ability fully to articulate his complaint or to explain his actions or decisions made at the time of the sale.''

The OP stated in the first post that ''At the time we thought PPI was compulsory, so we think we paid PPI''.

While it's entirely possible to make a PPI complaint without knowing whether or not you had it, it's obviously more desirable ( and far more likely to be successful) if you know for certain in advance of claiming.
  • Barclays told me they had no record of my loan with them from 1997. I did a bit more research found Barclays insurance and gave them a call. After giving them a few personal details they gave me my ppi policy number the dates it ran to and from and the loan account number.
I then sent all this info back to Barclays ppi team and they reopened my complaint

    Hope this helps
