Most of the bars had free wifi when I was over there. I think the main bar on the beach in Akumel has it.0

We will be mainly hotel based - I need the rest!
I've got a PAYG sim for my phone, I will put £10 on it & use it for texting DD.
BF will probably want to buy hotel Internet package. Can't be without his iPad ;-)0 -

Would be better to spend his money on unlocking a cheap MiFi unit and using it with a local SIM. That way he is not restricted to the Hotel and can use it in the UK and futher trips abroad.0 -

Mifi unit?
Like this or this.
Take the SIM out and keep it for another day. Unlock it for 7 euros using DC Unlocker software and use it most anywhere in the world with local SIM.
It creates your own WiFi Hotspot.

Why would anyone pay £10 for a UK PAYG sim just to use on a holiday to Mexico? £10 for 5 minutes of email checking, plus a couple of texts?
If you buy a local sim then one would expect data to be a few pence per Mb (instead of £5 or £6), and similarly for calls and texts.
Alternatively go to bars and restaurants with free WiFi - $50 for a week of WiFi sounds extortionate!
I confess that I do use my UK sim when abroad in the EU, but at least data in the EU is only about 70 pence per mb with a UK sim, so in a 2 week holiday, my phone use only costs me a few pounds.0 -

I won't use the PAYG sim for Internet only texts, so my £10 would get me 20 texts - far more than I will need.
We are in a 5* all inclusive (except WI-FI) hotel, so it wouldn't make sence to get in buses/cabs into Akumal to pay to drink in bars for free WI-FI, it would cost more than €50 & not be nearly so handy.0
