O2 say its £6.00 per MB when in Mexico on a PAYG sim.

What does that mean in laymans terms?

I will check emails, browse the web (checking out local attractions), use facebook, that sort of thing on my iphone. Maybe use watsap.

How long will £6.00 last?

An hour? A day? A week?

How much data do you use each month in the UK?

1Mb is the same in UK and in Mexico.

How much do you use the web?

Smartphones are fast becoming the norm and if you use your phone to constantly search the web you need to watch the amount of data you use. 1GB is what most networks offer on average as a "fair usage policy".

For checking emails, looking at Facebook and watching the odd YouTube video it should be more than enough. To give you a rough idea, one of our techies, MSE Joe, has an iPhone 4 on Orange with a data allowance of 750MB/month. He doesn't use even half of this, averaging about 350MB of data a month using Spotify, Twitter, Facebook and email apps. He doesn't watch any videos however. Downloading videos, TV shows or other web heavy apps may take you over your limit and incur heavy charges.

About 5 minutes on an iPhone...

As others have said, get a local sim, otherwise prepare for bill shock when you return...

No - I would only take a PAYG sim.

5 minutes of checking emails & looking at Holiday Truths - £6!!!!

I can buy the hotel Wi-fi for about $50 per week, could get it mid way through the first week & forgo it for the last few days.

Never having "bought" hotel WI-fi can you use your one payment & use it in a few devices? Ie can BF & I share it between both phones & an iPad or can you only use it in one device & have to pay per device?

Scared iPhone might try & connect itself (heard horror stories) so think I will pop a PAYG sim in it anyway just to be on the safe side :-)

Use the Opera Mini browser, which compresses data use, and also set it to turn images off.

Then the mobile version of the BBC website is a few kilobytes a page, and I would guess Facebook to be similar.

Set your email program to update only manually, and also headers only, then just read a couple and leave the rest until later. On my Nokia one check uses about 60 kilobytes in the phone's own client, but Gmail in Opera Mini is only about 15k a go.

With those measures it might be affordable, but other SIMs would be cheaper.

Try to negotiate a bit on the hotel wifi rate. Plenty of others are free.

It won't as long as you turn on airplane mode and turn on wifi.

Its not even worth trying to use it! I went to Antigua and i am with o2! I made the mistake of sending about 5 texts and maybe checked my emails twice and looked at another website no more than 15 minutes! They some how worked that out to £75 for the first month my normal bill is £45. Then the following month they charged me £150. They try and make it sound like they are helping you by telling you they will cap it for the first month and then put it all on the next month! I H8 mobile companies so many hidden charges! Every month my bill is like £60 and i only text in my allowance and hardly call! Just turn it off they are sneaky!! I phoned them after my bill after i had a go at them and got £40 refund which is something!
