Ryanair Cash Passport no longer bypasses admin fee!!!

  • Indeed, has anyone managed to cancel their card free of cancelling charge.
  • I had loaded a few quid extra to get the balance up to a round number +£2 for the withdrawl fee. However, I then realised they'd never sent me a PIN number!

So, I've just written to them to ask for the account to be closed and the funds to be sent to me via cheque or to my bank account.

It was enough hassle to try to open it, couldn't be dealing with all that again to get a PIN code to save £4, I'm afraid.

The PIN is not sent, you got it when you activated the card on the phone.
  • I don't think I ever actually did the telephone activation!

However, I've just dug out the material that came with the card and have called the activation number and got my PIN! Thanks for that!

I've just been to the ATM and have successfully taken out the remaining funds for a £2 charge. Have posted my cancellation letter also!

I'm not planning to pay any charges at all... I used £5 to top up my PostOffice account, and now I have £2.64 left.. not sure what to do with it! I didn't think it was possible to upload small amounts..?

I believe you can transfer any amount you want via bank transfer (see above on this thread). So you could transfer, say £9.36, and then take out £10 with £2 to cover the ATM charge. You'd only be up by 64p though!
  • I realise those of you who got led up one garden path and down a couple of others by Ryanair and who may now be left with surplus cash on the card you can only spend with a surcharge of 50p per transaction, or by some other hoop-jumping or merry dance, will be miffed.

However, no-one has repeated the great news in this thread that OFT forced Ryanair to ditch fees for using Debit Cards !

I am sitting smuggly having beaten Ryanair at their own game for the whole of 2012 by having flown with them about 20 times in the year without succumbing to applying for their card Cash Passport card, AND without incurring a single fee :p

How? As I use the same route constantly I just reversed the return pattern and bought the tickets the other way round i.e. Abroad->UK->Abroad instead of UK->Abroad->UK using my trusty Neteller prepaid Mastercard. I appreciate most people couldn't do that but it is always worth checking the opposite way terms/price. The other day I found that I could book the return leg of a journey 15% cheaper that way, particularly as I have a Metrobank debit card which (thanks Metrobank!) incurs no Mastercard FOREX fee (a Halifax Clarity or similar may still be just as good?)

And I still have 250 euros to collect on a three and a half hour delayed flight at the end of 2011 - I bet they'll kick and scream first (or more likely play dumb) but hey, fairs fair and airfares are fairer thanks to OFT and CAA and ECJ finally getting their teeth into a few decent matters ;)

Good idea. IIRC this didn't work from Germany, France, Spain, Italy, Ireland as you could obtain a Cash Passport in those countries.
