Unmountable Boot volume 90% of the time is a corrupt filesystem.

Chkdsk /r from the Recovery Console will fix it, if thats the case.

You'll need an XP CD. Boot off of it. Choose R for recovery console.

Log in, and at the prompt type:

    chkdsk /r

Access the recovery console. (This is the first repair option you get after you boot off the Windows XP CD
(To see where this menu is Click here), unfortunately some OEM CD's (Or recovery CD's) do not have this option), but if you download the Windows XP boot disks you will be able to use the Console.
Once you log into the recovery console type the following command "CHKDSK /F" or "CHKDSK /P".

she may beed to go into BIOS , F2 key on start up and make sure that the PC boots from the XP disk first

how old is her DELL Pc, and does she have stuff she's prepared to lose on the hard disk ??

there is a recovery partition on newish Dells that you can access by hitting ctrl F11 on boot up as you see the blue line across the top of the screen..this will restore it to factory defaults and everything thats on the PC will be lost !!!!
