Hi everyone, finally back from nipping to town. Sainsbugs had a q for petrol, no idea why though. I had to join them as the fuel light was on. Nipped into wilco's and they have reduced the price of the wallpaper. I would like to redo the living room but may have to save up.
As for these times being hard, it is definatley starting to show even more around here. Our village butchers has reduced its prices as they have more customers due to the horse meat scandal. I know shocking, but they are trying to keep each and everyone of them.Homemade burgers are 37p each and have very little fat in them. We have them cooked in gravy, does anyone remember the ones that came in a tin like it???

OH is asleep on the sofa, the swelling on his head has gone down a bit. He says its still sore but not as bad. He had a meeting with management and he going to be a first aider on site. They are going to recruit a few more too. So some good has come out of this.

Just fed the birds some bread, as its snowing still. I'm sure they will appreciate a little food today.

Made some soup from the knorr packets, we had thick veg soup. It so reminds me of my childhood as we often had It for tea. DD refused to eat it tho, so had a cheese sandwich.

    Keep warm everyone

  • B & T and SILVASAVA thank you both so much, I'm sure I'll be able to cobble a mix together and that is a good place to start with the basics. I'm pretty sure that the Rhineland version we are used to had paprika in too so will give it a go and see if it tastes similar to the original, Cheers Lyn xxx.

    I'll ask around Jem...

It can't cost that much, I wonder where they will put it so it can be obtained.
Edited: Why not email Syd the editor and ask him if he knows as they printed and published the leaflet? I would guess Stevens and Taylors in the town centre - when the weather is better I may pedal down to N. News and get a copy.

My new iron arrived delivered by Yodel and is utterly fantastic. Brilliant for me as DS always whacks the setting up to max and burns items as a result, but this clever device uses an optimum temperature for all fabrics.
Like all good quality steam-generator irons it gets out creases like a dream,

I still haven't unwrapped my new mop which arrived at the same time, off to do that now.

OK - here's the recipe for Granny Cake - its really good & keeps well too.

    Granny Spice Cake

    Ingredients
12ozs Plain Flour (can use SR)
    Pinch Salt
    2 Level tsp Baking Powder
    1 Level tsp Mixed Spice
    5oz Margarine
    6ozs Caster Sugar
    10ozs Dried Fruit
    1 Large Egg
    Milk to Mix

    Oven: Gas Mark 4 – 350deg

    Method
Grease & flour a 7in cake tin. Sift flour, salt, baking powder & mixed spice into a bowl add margarine & rub in until mixture resembles bread crumbs. Mix in sugar & dried fruit. Beat egg lightly & add to ingredients with enough milk to make a fairly stiff dough. Turn into tin & make a well in the centre.
Bake in centre of oven for 1hr 45mins
    Leave in Tin to cool.

Note: I add a sprinkling of any coarse grained sugar over the top before it goes in the oven for a nice crunchy topping

just have 10 mins for a cuppa in between cooking duties. Have 2 loaves rising nicely and a beef (hopefully beef anyway) casserole in the oven, smells lush and I have felt hungry all day, must be the cold weather. Wanted to bake cakes but not sure can muster the energy today, might leave til tomorrow.

Waiting on my mum to phone this weekend "to have a chat" - feeling a bit stressed at the thought. I doubt we will get anywhere in terms of resolving things but I am prepared to hear anything she might need to say at least. My sister has emailed too and MIL recently. I can't be dealing with them all at the same time. They all want to sort things out but they fail to realise its them that need sorting out :rotfl:, have to try and see the funny side otherwise I will feel really down.

Had a couple of OS questions to ask but for the life of me.....

(((((( kidcat )))))) - sorry things are so bad, always here if you need a chat love.

ok back to the kitchen, at least its warm there.

    take care everyone

Evening all. Well had a mixed day. Picked up my prescription this morning to find that the doctor has given me the childs version of the medicine which won't 'touch it' (according to the pharmacist). So now have to wait till monday to get it sorted :( grrrrrrrrrr

Had a nice afternoon catching up with friends from work and then my mummy said I'd been working hard with LO so treated us to a takeaway :)

Just enjoyed it and now Daddy is having Daddy and Dylan time by giving him a bath and doing bedtime :)

Then a nice quiet evening just the 2 of us, almost wish we had a bottle of wine!

Peanut as your little one is so young, maybe your doctor thought you were breastfeeding so couldnt give you the adult dose?

I can empathise, I woke last Sunday with earache and its not really gone away even after my antibiotics.
  • Evening all,

It sure comes to something when Edinburgh is about the only place that doesn't have snow! We do have an evil easterly wind that is really chilling though.

We're just getting ready to take part in Earth Hour - so have plenty of candles and a wind-up radio ready to go.

Has anyone heard from Softstuff or KatieOwl recently? I used recipes from both of them this afternoon and it just occurred to me I couldn't recall seeing them around. We're about to have some fig and walnut bread with our supper: it's the first bread I've made where I've actually kneaded it by hand so I'm hoping it's ok.

Stay warm and tucked up everyone.
