  • Hi all, I normally lurk, so, please forgive me if there's something I've missed.

Fuddle, don't you get a bursary for studying to be a nurse? I'm an RMN (mental health nurse) and qualified just over 2 years ago, had a full bursary and no fees to pay as I was on a nursing course?

As I say, forgive me, if you've already covered this and I've missed it.

Also, don't worry about being older than some of the students; I was 31 when I started and one of my best friends was 52! People from all ages and walks of life make life-changing decisions, and though you may find yourself wondering 'what on EARTH possessed me to do this' for the first few months, you'll love it if it's what you really want to do.

    Good luck!

Hi v8. I knew about the bursery but didn't know anything about the fees possibly being paid. I will look into it, thank you!

I worries me about being in debt re: fees etc but I have to look at as an investment in our future. It also worries me that I might not be physically fit to work as a nurse at the age of 68 but what is the point of thinking like that eh? What will be will be, whatever happens will happen and I'll deal with it.

You do not pay fees -see http://www.nhsbsa.nhs.uk/Students/3260.aspx

  • Thanks RAS! I didn't think you would have to pay fees, but didn't know if it had changed :)

Flaming heck!!!! Hey thanks so much for that, both of you. I'm thrilled to bits. Wow. I won't have any debt!! That's major for me, I promised myself that I would never owe a penny again but have slowly accepted that I had to speculate to accumulate. I'm blown away!

Of course you can do it, Fuddle!! Good, positive news.

Yet another mature student here, I was 48 when I got my degree, I did that part-time. I was by no means the oldest on the course, though I think I may have been the oldest to graduate, as some did drop out.

The first year was actually my Cert Ed, the second year I was working full time, and the third year I was working more or less full time.
Plus running the house on my own and doing a Level 4 uni. cert. in a different subject, alongside the third year.

I don't drive either, so had to factor in a lot of extra travel time.

It all got done, because that's what you do, you just get on with it, and plough on and eventually you emerge... and it's all over!
Ok I got a 2.2 and not a 2.1, but it's not often I get asked what I got. Of 9 from my study group, 2 got 2.1s, the rest 2.2s, but no 3rds, so I wasn't alone.

    Found this...

Some of this is obvious but I thought the tip to reverse tomatoes that have gone soft was interesting...

Yes mcculloch, 'another just get on with it' person here. I am so pleasantly surprised at just how many of you were mature students.

Can I ask a spag Bol question? Traditionally is there supposed to be carrot in it? I've reduced the amount of mince in it tonight while bulking out with grated carrot. It tasted perfect. Just wondering if I have inadvertently stumbled across the correct way of making it.
  • FUDDLE you know I keep saying it's all meant to be and just falling into place? well it's happened again hasn't it? No fees what's not to like? Bursary? way to go!!!

I always put grated carrot in my spag bol, I always have it gives it a nice moist texture and sweetens the tomatoes up too!!

    Cheers Lyn xxx.

I love reading about nursie and her antics:rotfl: Should we send the SAS after her? Or would they end up locked in a cupboard along with the rugby team?
:D Dunno about the SAS but she heard that the US Marines were after a few good men and got the darndest look in her eye..............

She's a terror but I am missing her teamaking expertise and her version of tough love. It's very tough.

fuddle, I think you'll walk into that course and do very well. Think of all the experience which is part of your unique offering compared to someone straight out of school. They'd be lucky to have you, and that's the living truth.

Have been hurtling about my life today, in and out and up to the lottie after work (first time since autumn!) OK I did need the bike light as came home at 5.30 pm in in the dusk but still. Pal dropped in for a cuppa and to admire my newly-made candles and we caught up on the news.

Right, gonna go watch a DVD series which has to be back in a couple of days, dropping by later tonight. GQ xx
