Hugs Madeline's Mum...
Its funny I have graters and I still cannot always work out what each side is for:p:oand I've been cooking for decades...
Funny isn't it...was never formally taught at school or at home but I guess it comes down to common sense or you take things in without realising.
And of course many items have instructions and once learnt most meals follow the same temperatures and timings. Not forgetting looking at what you are cooking."A government afraid of its citizens is a Democracy. Citizens afraid of government is tyranny!" ~Thomas Jefferson

TD assuming the TV company picks up the bill, I wonder if when its all over how many of those featured go back to less expensive/simple meals?
If I had a successful TV career, books and they are also doing a theatre tour(locally sold out and quite expensive)what they are doing may be reasonably costed by their standards..."A government afraid of its citizens is a Democracy. Citizens afraid of government is tyranny!" ~Thomas Jefferson

Its nice to prove how thrifty/frugal we all are but often it is not through choice.
I would welcome one programme where budget is taken into account and simple/comforting food is featured.
Luckily, I have plenty of sites I can visit and friends on here to give me ideas and hopefully enough ideas in my head to adapt what I have into something that is tasty and not costing the earth.

What has surprised me reading up on stock is that its packed with vitamins and minerals. Literally all the goodness from the veg and bones goes into it. I read one older lady saying that stock had all the benefits of eating veg without eating veg. I don't get it though as I was taught that cooking the veg gets rid of goodness. How can it be in a stock that's on the hob from anywhere from 3 hours to 12 one lady suggested (eeek the gas!)0

Some of you may have seen this thread before, but I only came across it today.
Some of the prices will be a little out as it was started in 2006 but it is still worth a look.

Fuddle Chicken bone stock is very good for you and especially when you are ill. The minerals and any vitamins not harmed by heat will be in the stock from the bones as well as the veg.
A clear soup made from it is easy to digest when you are not well enough for more solid food.
For soup / stew ( I call it that since a friend who tried some said it was more like stew it was so loaded up)
I make a stock, strain and cool it one day then next day I scrape excess fat off the top and heat it up. Then add veg of all kinds cut in small pieces or I use bags of frozen veg. Season and cook till the veg is tender. Then I add any meat I saved off the bones at the end of cooking. Easy.0 -

No problem with the Hairy Bikers as such but what they is a cheap meal per portion, in the new series unless I can adapt and strectch it out still seems quite costly. They did soufle and said it cost £2.50 per person and it served four. That's £10 so unless I spend that and count it as four meals over a period of time I could have quite a few meals and not just one course.
I think the point of that series is that it's entertaining friends at home as if you were going to a posh restaurantIt's never going to be basic, cheap food. Horses for courses and all that. I love the Hairy Bikers, think they adapt well from cheap and cheerful to gourmet, but you can't expect them all to cost the same per head. I'd rather spend what I have on decent quality food than keep it in the bank or spend on outings, but that's me. Others have different priorities and that's fine too. Always remember the founder of this site is a multimillionaire who could afford to dine on the finest food every single day
And who rarely has to think twice about anything he, his wife or child desire
