Spoke to a lady at the very posh new care home nearby to ask about volunteer work (they want some!!) and asked how much they pay their care assistants ...... £6.20 an hour. I was shocked! I have seen cleaning jobs on higher rates than that. Seems strange to me as it is such a responsible and important job.0

It doesn't surprise me AJ, I heard rumours that the home Mum spent her last days was short of staff too even though it had a good report from the Government Dept that checks homes out.
When talking to an employee of the home the other day in the SM, she said they are looking for volunteers but that would only be(though important to the people there)talking to them. You are not allowed to do anything else.
I can remember times when I heard alarms from people that took ages to answer when I stayed with Mum.

Evening all
Back from first day of my employment and interview skills course. I really enjoyed it but am absolutely shattered. Been waking up extra early last few days and not getting back to sleep. We are doing mock interviews all tomorrow morning and I have 3 sets of CVs/job descriptions/interview questions for 3 different "candidates" to prepare for plus my own stuff for my interview. I am too tired now to think so decided will get the kids to bed soon (they both have colds anyway) and have a quick bath and get clothes etc ready for tomorrow and just chill and early night. Will get up early again and prep Qs etc before I leave and on the train. I can't cope if I am tired.
DH has been great, gave kids tea early and picked me up from station and then 5 mins chat before whizzing off to college. He had left my tea in the oven and I am eternally grateful for that.
Fuddle - DH and I were both veggies in a previous life (before we met) and we both used to make nutroasts and loved them. Kids not keen on them so we don't make them now. I think we might make one again and give the kids an alternative and a little taste of nutroast to try and convert them. I have a receipe if you need one?
we also love jacket pots and cheesy beans - thanks for reminder will cook that again soon. I will also be looking at some different meals, mostly cheaper ones. The price of food is scaring me too.
Unixgirl - great news! well done you! :j
mcculloch - are you feeling better today?
2tonsils - glad your job is going well.
right off to get poorly boys off to the blanket show, then sort myself out
high fives to those who need them and hugs and hot chocolate (with cream and chocolate sprinkles if you fancy) all round
be as kind to yourselves as you are to others...

Do you remember I was saying its not fair that those who don't deserve it seem to get all the luck? Well a certain person who caused years of grief and upset for me and my family (I ended up seriously ill with the stress she caused yet she played the victim constantly with new people) has been scammed it seems and she hasn't realised. She's forked out £500 for a modelling portfolio and claims to have been offered a multi year modelling contract via email. Now it was only when I heard the name talent management alarm bells rang. She's off boasting she's got this contract, yet she's not met anyone etc, only parted with her cash. A friend who works for trading standards mentioned this company not so long ago and they also appeared on watchdog under a previous name.
..........I know it would be wicked to laugh.......but what goes around comes around.......its just taken years!CC2 = £8687.86 ([STRIKE]£10000[/STRIKE] )CC1 = £0 ([STRIKE]£9983[/STRIKE] ); Reusing shopping bags savings =£5.80 vs spent £1.05.Wine is like opera. You can enjoy it even if you don't understand it and too much can give you a headache the next day J0 -
Thanks sq
save your typing fingers
ill try investigate online for a recipe.
Been reading about hm stock, it's fascinating! Apparently years ago there was pretty much a stock bubbling nightly with leftover bones and veg. A good preserving tip was to put the stock in glass jars, allow the fat to solidify on the top and put in the fridge. The fat stops any air from spoiling the stock.
Think we'll have a chicken soup night and a ginger pud and custard.0 -
FUDDLE yes m'dear you can freeze chicken stock made from a carcass, the veg you used will be tasteless as all the flavour will now be in the stock so best to compost heap that, and dispose of the bones etc. Then the world of soup is your mollusc of choice, and very tasty it will be too!!! Cheers Lyn xxx. Don't water it down , just use it as it is and enjoy!!!!0

SQ, thanks, yes, I'm so much better. Just a bit annoyed that I was ill on a Tuesday, of all days. It only seems to happen when I forget to take a certain painkiller regularly. Which does happen if my arthritis isn't painful.
So the 5:2 diet was a 4:3 one as I couldn't eat.
I've just made spag. bol. with Quorn mince, very yummy as I let the sauce simmer for ages so that the Quorn can absorb the flavour. I also prefer Quorn as there's no fat, that should balance out the pancakes.
Final word from me on pancakes. The great disappointment of going to the States was discovering that their much-vaunted 'pancakes' were drop scones, aka Scotch Pancakes or pikelets, (insert regional name of choice). I only knew them as pikelets as a child. My mum didn't make them, but I had them once a year at a post-Christmas party in my church, in Cardiff.
They were lovely - which reminds me, it's ages since I've made some, I think I'll put them on the list of Cheap Things To Cook Soon, along with Mark Hix's recipe for Pommes Anna.Erma Bombeck, American writer: "If I had my life to live over again... I would have burned the pink candle, sculptured like a rose, that melted in storage." Don't keep things 'for best' - that day never comes. Use them and enjoy them now.0 -

Been bobbling around living my life. Went to work and went to the special TetraPak recycling bin, such an exciting life I lead.Texting to and fro with a pal trying to make a cunning plan for the weekend without knowing if the weather will co-operate.
Bracing ourselves for that anteroom of hell known as Year End, starting any moment now. All leave is suspended, all hands to the pumps and gawd help us all in La-La Land. We will next catch our breath in mid-April. I lurves the Year End.......not!
Seed spuds have just appeared in the shops, I always buy mine the weekend after Valentine's Day, so much more practicable than roses, I feel. Prices seem to be up a bit this year, but I'll shop around a bit and see if I can better those I've seen thus far.
OK, gonna have tomato soup and buttered cream crackers, my fave light supper.
Oh, just had to share; I bought what I thought was a double-plastic bagged whoopsied bunch of black grapes last week; 06 kg for £1.25. Pretty pleased with the price. Even more pleased when I got home and found they were cherries (normally £13.99 a kilo). Fair do's the label didn't say they were grapes. I'd just assumed and was pleased with the mistake.Every increased possession loads us with a new weariness.
