Fuddle Good luck on the job fromt & with the ex LL
Elizabunny Managed 3 days on the 5:2 diet last week ('cos I missed one the week before) Hang on in there - it does get easier, honest;)
Small rant - went to see Les Mis yesterday afternoon with DS1 & DGF & some other friends. We used a voucher for Prezzo after - really nice day. I went to the loo & left my long scarf in the cubicle - half an hour later it had walked. There wer'n't that many people in the restaurant & some b*gger was too light fingered to hand it in GRRRR
Anyway I shall rise above itSmall victories - sometimes they are all you can hope for but sometimes they are all you need - be kinder than necessary, for everyone you meet is fighting some kind of battle0 -

Has anyone else found that the Al*i veg aren't keeping for more than a few days even in the fridge? I shopped on Thursday last week and I've just had to process nearly everything I brought as the broccoli and cauliflower were both floppy and the broccoli had started to yellow, the white cabbage had a big patch of rot on one side, the savoy had yellowed on the outside leaves and had some black patches too and the carrots had started going slimy in the bag. not good. I think I'll buy my veg elsewhere until the new season starts. Consequently I have been very industrious in the kitchen today, I have made a big batch of Carrot and Coriander soup which should see us through the week, a big batch of coleslaw, cooked the savoy for a Cabbage Troo Style casserole for lunch tomorrow and steamed the broccoli and cauliflower to make cauliflower cheese , enough to make us 3 good suppers. I got Coxs Apples too and a couple of those are rotting at the stem so I'll have to use them quickly. I know the growing season was peculiar last year but I don't find it happening as quickly with veg from other sources!
Hope your snow is well and truly going or gone by now, we are cool here today but not cold and have just opened up the polytunnel to give it a breather, All we have left in at present is a few beetroot and some parsley but it has done well over the winter and I've just harvested the last of the coriander for my soup. He Who Knows has been having a dig and weed in there this morning and we are really looking forward to getting the new growing season underway. Have a good day all, Cheers Lyn xxx.0 -
I usually ignore dates on most food. Trusting the look and feel of fruit and veg but Aldi's don't have any dates on their vegetables...
I guess as the selection is small and they get a daily delivery it is not likely to be in store for long but I would quite like a date as a guide even if I ignore it.
I guess the argument could be made that a greengrocer/market stall selling loose fruit and veg doesn't have dates so why should they.
I really should just make a mental note of when I buy..."A government afraid of its citizens is a Democracy. Citizens afraid of government is tyranny!" ~Thomas Jefferson

I dare say it's quite a bit older once it hits the barrows in Aldi. I would like to know how they can be so cheap. My worry is if we're paying 39 - 69p for a bag of carrots, what is the farmer getting? I bet the stores' profits are greater than those of the farmer.
Shakes head. I can't have principles when not a lot of money for the shopping budget. I did struggle with Aldi's fruit and veg when I shopped there though. That and an off chicken made me have a break...but thinking of going to back if i means cheaper pasta, butter, milk, cereals etc.0 -
I find everything else perfectly OK and good value FUDDLE specially the cooked meats and cheeses and thier frozen food is good value too, so I will keep using them. The fruit and veg going quickly is a recent thing, the last three times I've noticed it most. I expect the growing season weather was so bad it is affecting the keeping ability.Cheers Lyn xxx0

We're starting to really cut costs this week, while I've enough of an income to allow for "mistakes", and are going to use up the freezer and pantry stocks prior to a real shake up food-wise at the end of the week. DS has just heard he's got a new job, too, so will be leaving SM job in a month or so - we get 10% discount when we shop there, so will think carefully about what I buy there to make the most of it before it ends!
Not been to our Aldi for ages, but most of their fruit and veg used to be ok, a few things wouldn't last long (soft fruits, pepper, mushrooms, etc), but I try to buy UK produce wherever I shop - getting hard to do though!

MrsLW:- I have found that their apples and tangerines are going off quicker.
I had a bit of unpleasantness at the school gate this morning.
The snow was cleared enough to drive to the school with occasional double width for cars to pass each other. I got to the gate only to be stopped by another car. He had a double width about five foot behind him but would not reverse and wanted me to reverse 200 yards to let him pass. I asked him to reverse and he refused again. I think he expected me to be a 'woman' and wring my hands!
Instead, since I was at the school, I got the children out off the car, locked it and proceeded to get them into the school gate. I waited as usual to check they were through the second gate and this man went off it. Still sitting in his car and threatening to get me! Shouting and bawling and I tried to say just go back five foot but he was raging! He drove his car into the deep snow to get past, I'm sure he will have damaged it.
The other parents could not believe how unpleasant he was. I know I was being bl**dy minded sorting the twins but that's what I was there for and I didn't want them to be late.
I think I am too old to be having to deal with idiots flexing their macho muscle at half eight in the morning.Give us the strength to encounter that which is to come, that we may be brave in peril, constant in tribulation, temparate in wrath, and in all changes of fortune, and down to the gates of death, loyal and loving to one another.”0 -
