  • Morning All,

We (finally) have snow here - it will be interesting to see how it develops as we are supposed to be getting it quite bad over the next few hours. Have been doing regular checks on my mum down in Yorkshire and all I can say is she has the most lovely neighbours. They have been constantly asking if she needs anything from the shops and have cleared her path and drive foer her:T

KatieOwl - I need advice from my baking guru! I'm going to try the Jamie Oliver chocolate cake tonight. Does it work if you do all the mixing (except the last folding in of the nuts) in a kenwood chef? Or should I just cream the butter and sugar together in the mixer and then do the rest by hand? Thanks

Well I've been at work for almost an hour - so it must be time for my second cuppa of the day!

    Have a warm/good day everyone.

Morning everyone, very snowey here. Have just walked into the village for a newspaper for my mum. The bread was just being delivered, so i treated myself to a loaf!!It was 92p for a fresh large loaf so not that expensive really.

We are still gettnig the fine snow here, and amazingly its not that overly cold out. Its suppose to continue here for the next few hours at least. Youngest DD is doing a work exeperience placement in the local primary school so just a 5 minute walk away.

Can i please rant here, we sold an item on eb,ay yesterday and the person emailed for details of address and telephone number. They called to say they were then coming, then nothing. I stayed in all yesterday and no one turned up.... Was so annoyed. Why do poeple do this????

Right have to go and start cleaning the kitchen. It going to get a move around, tidy up and touch up of the paint where someone has marked the wall.

Take care everyone, and pops in particular make sure you have some heating on.

Pops be mindful if you get a BP machine. Some people get very fixated by them and constantly take their blood pressure. This can result in false high readings. The other issue is that once purchased these machines never have their calibration checked to ensure they are recording accurately.

    Mrs VG,
What you say makes a lot of sense...I always used to get into a bit of a discussion about BP tests when with my GP/Consultant as I could have a bad reading. A few minutes later one that was much better. It is only a snapshot at the time it is taken and they say there is evidence that some of us do get "Worked Up" when it is time to have a BP test taken.

I have my BP taken at least twice a year.

    Morning all :)

Our school is shut today. So relieved I don't have to drive! :jBit annoyed though that is was such a pain to find out. They said would be on school website - it wasn't on there to begin with and then just kept crashing and it wasn't on the radio website either. Nor on the school automated answer thingie. Had a sudden brainwave and texted a mum who started to get friendly with who is a parent governer and then proceeded to text anyone on my phone list. I have just checked another radio station website out of curiousity and lo and behold the school is listed there instead (though not for ages according to another mum - texts have been flying back and forth fast!) Someone has made a boob obviously. So another round of texts to let people know that info. Lucky I had plenty of free phone credit.

Also cleared car of snow and our path, drive and pavement outside our house as best as I can. Planned to do the bit between ours and nxt door (as they def won't do it) but back hurting now and too scared to push it any further. Looked down the street and only one house has cleared their section of pavement! We have further snow forecast for later today too.

Still feeling a bit poorly but getting there so will get a few chores done today, nag/help boys tidy their room (at "burgular just been" stage now!), bit of time on here and a bit of schoolwork, DS8 has spellings and tables to learn and will so some reading with DS6.

be happy whatever you're up to and take it easy with the cold weather. just off to have a second cuppa of the day and then on with chores I guess - the excitement :D

    sq:)

We were advised by our local council not to clear the path outside our houses, as if someone fell on that bit of path we would be held responsible.

Silly I know, but I am not taking the chance. I can little afford being sued by some compensation freak.

I thought it had been clarified that you wouldn't normally be responsible? The court case that was based on was where the woman did something frankly stupid (poured a kettleful of boiling water over the pavement which promptly froze into invisible glassy ice ie she CREATED the hazard). If you clear it and put down grit or salt it should be OK. I do warn people who walk by while I am in the middle of clearing snow and say clearly "do be careful, I haven't put any salt down yet"

Grey Queen you work for the LA in your town - what do they say?
It doesn't matter if you are a glass half full or half empty sort of person. Keep it topped up! Cheers!

I got my vitamins(and some were on the penny sale)most expensive item was the ginger capsules. And as I got so much what I have could last me between six months to a year.

Ooh thanks for the "heads up" Pops on the penny sale. I have just checked and they have my regular stuff on there (Rhodiola Rosea, Vitamin D and Cod Liver Oil) so I shall buy a years worth. The Rhodiola is £12.99 a pot so 2 for £13 is a real bargain. They haven't got my beloved Rooibos tea in the sale this time :( but you can't have everything I guess.

Has anyone used a chiropractor? What sort of thing do they do? My back is no better, in fact tonight its worse than ever, my physio appointment is eight weeks away so am seriously considering a chiropractor this week.

I have used a chiropractor and I rather liked her. It doesn't last though. She diagnosed some food intolerances and, as much as I thought she was talking nonsense she has proved to be right. I think there was an element of me sticking my fingers in my ears going "la la la la" as she said I shouldn't eat coffee, chocolate or red wine  But I have since learned I am better for not having those things - or at least too much. The best thing for my back and neck issues is yoga which I try to do once a week at our leisure centre, but it can make me feel quite sick so I have to be careful.

I'm not much of a swearer either and certainly not in company, 99% of the time any I may say are so mild. I've never had the need of it.

:o I can be :o You can take the girl off the building site but you can't take the building site off the girl! My dad was a swearer and where I come from it was and is common to hear really bad language. I was using really quite foul language from around 12 years old - I am actually much better now. I never swear in front of the kids (oh alright, there is the odd "bl00dy") or AT anyone. I mostly use it for comedy value with the OH - some words are so satisfying to say :D and I don't swear in front of the students. My mum once wanted us to be quiet and, after several attempts, blurted out "will you F**cking shut up" - there was absolute silence and we looked at her like . She was :o but it did the trick :p My DS (13) swears, but has been told that we don't want to hear it here, and I don't like to think of him doing it out on the street with his mates, but I can't control it. My OH says we have to let it go outside the house and as long as DS stays away from cigarettes, drugs and alcohol then the swearing isn't so bad.

We have snow falling lightly now, which is how it started yesterday apparently, before turning into blizzard. I flew in from a warm and sunny place yesterday lunchtime (It was Sri Lanka - but it was work) and thought I'd fly over a carpet of whiteness - saw nothing until we were about 3 miles out of Birmingham. DD's exam is at 1.00 and the school is around half an hour away. I have said we should leave around 11.30 and we will go to a C0sta lotta for coffee if we are early. School is otherwise closed so there won't be anywhere for her to wait there.

I will go back and fetch her after as I don't want to trust to trains in case the snow does worsen. I also have one of those tests that ladies regularly have to have - GQ I will be thinking of your "shouldn't we at least have had a couple of dates before we get to this point" :rotfl: Hope she warms the scopey thing they use (sorry Pops, TMI!:p).

    Such fun!
I wanna be in the room where it happens
  • Morning all. Its beautiful outside and the children (including me) are really enjoying the snow. we have about 4 inches.
the weekend has been very busy and tiring starting with a six hour visit to a&e with little brother who thought he had broken his knuckles. He hadnt luckily but it was still 4am saturday morning before we got in and nearly 5am before we got to sleep. Then i had to be up and out by noon for brownie/rainbow panto. was excellent and so glad we went. Yesterday i went to my daughters new flat with her - yes she finally has the keys! We took meter readings and unpacked things like mugs and sugar. Unfortunatley one of the lifts is being replaced and the other one decided to sound like it was hitting something on the 8th floor and again on the sixth floor:eek:. we got out of that lift very fast and walked the rest of the way. Furniture is not being moved in until the snow has gone as it just isnt safe what with the snow and the lift being dodgy. I am many things but stupid enough to carry a sofa up 11 flights of stairs i am not!

Snow here too - not what I'd call masses though, looking like probably 2 inches on the garden and wall tops but the main road at the bottom is clear. Contemplating whether to got and get DH when he finishes work or [STRIKE]let[/STRIKE] make him get the bus. The advantage of picking him up is that I could park on the main road at the bottom and not have to try and get the car out of our parking space tomorrow when it is nursery - means carrying the kids down the road but I do have Yaktraks so that may well be the best bet. Not sure yet how the new car handles in snow and it's too shiny and dink free to want to find out really! :D

Like the positive name for your new wheels Fuddle - my cars always get alliterative names, always male, that also have to come from the country of origin for the make too so This new one is Bernarde the Berlingo!

Got a chicken for tea tonight - think I may poach it as it always seems to go further then do chicken pie for tomorrow night's tea.

Stay warm and safe everyone. X

Happy if it helps:)(some things are so expensive:eek:)but not as bad if in the penny sale. My seakelp(500tablets)and cod liver(120capsules)were in the penny sale. In hindsight I must have been mad...the ginger root cost approx £8(100 capsules)and they say use two daily. Not in the sale either:(...now I have found a jar of ground ginger in Aldi's for 49p. And Ginko Gilboa/Glucosomine is expensive there too. So for now I will probably only pop in occasionally but will watch for offers.

But I thought the price of the kelp and cod liver not too bad.

In general there is swearing and there is swearing, again I don't get easily shocked and as you say often it can be used in a comic way and sometimes in a kind of affectionate way as you have alluded to. You might say something like "You daft old B*****!";)

Really It's a case of knowing your friends and family and what is acceptable. Often you just know...
