WCS, it wasn't our house, it was everywhere. But we were quite genteel despite being working class and none of us kids knew what piles were, and adults wouldn't explain!
Thank goodness for books, or I'd've been as green as grass. I think I was in my thirties before I heard a parent swear.
Yes that describes us too - genteel working class. Think Mum was terrified in case we said anything out of turn in front of the nuns.
I still don't like swearing and never do myself - I don't like people swearing in front of me either and folks soon learn that and don't make the same mistake twice. I'll "forgive" those I work with while they aren't well but once on the mend I encourage good manners.0 -
We never had nuns, there didn't seem to be any around our way. They still seem to be very exotic beings.
I get so bored with how so many people swear constantly, every second word out of their mouths begins with F. SuperGran refers to it as "effing and c-ing" and some of our neighbours are very prone to it. They must be truly lost for words when something shocking happens, as their everyday speech is so pungent.I wince when I hear parents using the f word at and in front of their children. That's a big cultural change in the last generation. Back in my Dad's young day, even if a man was cussing in public, they'd be other men a-plenty to butt in with something like Oi! Mind yer language, wimmin and children present!

Newsflash! We've had a snow shower and the area is now recharged with snowy loveliness.Every increased possession loads us with a new weariness.

I'm not much of a swearer either and certainly not in company, 99% of the time any I may say are so mild. I've never had the need of it."A government afraid of its citizens is a Democracy. Citizens afraid of government is tyranny!" ~Thomas Jefferson

Hello everyone,
I thought I'd pop in and post something before I completely get out of the habit. I haven't posted much this week - simply because there isn't much going on here at the moment.
It seems very strange that we have very little snow here in Edinburgh compared to much of the country, but it is certainly cold enough.
I don't know if anyone gets the Observer, but their food monthly magazine was all about "Eating well for less" today - and for once it was fairly realistic. They also did an article about this blog, which is about food poverty and budgeting. I've had a quick look and will definitely be going back some more.
Happy Birthday to all my fellow January-born toughies and welcome to all the new folk.
I'll be back just as soon as anything newsworthy happens here at 7ww mansions!
Have a good week everyone.0 -
7WW,
Thank you for that I now have accessed the blog and the online version of the Observers Food Mag:)"A government afraid of its citizens is a Democracy. Citizens afraid of government is tyranny!" ~Thomas Jefferson

Hello Everyone
Happy Birthday to those who have been celebrating :bdaycake:
Congrats on the arrival of Joy fuddle May you have many happy adventures together
We have had more snow today, I'd say about 2 inches worth. The snow looks quite deep in the garden but some of the depth is made up of the grass that hasn't been mown in a whileThe heating broke down again today and DH spent ages defrosting and lagging the condesing pipe that is outside. So that limited what could be done until we had heating and hot water again. We haven't done a lot at all over the past week to be honest, no sledging, snow ball fights or snowmen built here. I'm slowly getting over this head cold and hoping no one else in the family gets ill. My boys are hoping that they don't have to go to school/college tomorrow.
I have no idea what we are having for dinner but I have apple and blackberry compote simmering away and baked rice pudding in the oven, so we might just eat that. I have some ox cheeks to turn into stew tomorrow. I might even have another go at making dumplings. DH doesn't really like them so I don't tend to make them.
Oh...rice pudding is doneTake care and stay warm everyone xxx

I am also of genteel working class stock - I refer to my background as "upper working class" :rotfl:I was the only kid in school with a paper serviette (napkin's the middle class word, right?!) in my packed lunch box every door. Little swearing heard in our house, just the odd "hell's bliddy bells" from my Geordie dad when we kids had stepped way over the mark!
Our snow is pretty thick now in Essex and still coming down. Wish I knew if the school was open tomorrow or not, they don't tell us til last minute and we will be late if we wait to hear as will need to drive more slowly and park further from school etc. Still better to be late than make an unnecessary journey in the snow. Kids have only ever had 1 late mark - when the car wouldn't start one winter and had to call a cab. I don't like late marks!!

It's still like that here to a degree GQ - my son had a friend visiting who swore, and he soon stopped him. They swear like troopers out on the boat apparently but none of them swear at home, and if there are women around in the pub they don't either. I'm quite old-fashioned - I particularly don't like to hear women swear, although a lot of the younger ones are as bad as the guys.
The nuns I knew were just mean and nasty I'm afraid, and they were pretty vicious too.
Well, better get myself organised for work again - the weekend seems to go by too fast! Am city-bound tomorrow for a hospital appointment and then working the rest of the week.
Have a good week guys, and stay safe.

Evening all.... No more snow here but it's not got above 0 all day.
I slept in much later than I do usually, which made for a short day LOL. May be because I threw some fleeces over the curtain rails in the bedroom to keep the heat in a bit, but it made it much darker.
We ran out of bottled gas for the stove last night  so tonights dinner had to involve not boiling anything. OH and DS had a pizza from Ald! and I had a jacket potato. Made some salad from a YS celeriac and carrots, and a bean salad. Was nice, but a bit cold Brrrr. OH can go and get some more tomorrow.
After DS and I took the dogs out, I collared OH and a saw, to come with me to where I'd seen some fallen branches. We filled the car up with burning material...some of it quite stout branches. :T
That blog looks interesting POPS & 7WW
I've bookmarked it for a good look later!
