You've made me remember how old I am (70).
Yes I remember the cold winter in the 60s. The Billy Cotton Band Show on the radio (had to be quiet because my father listened to it)
Chilblains- very painful.
Even queing with my grandmother for the meat ration - for what seemd like hours.
When I watch some of the programs on T.V. I remind myself of my father who would watch war films and point out everything which wasn't accurate. I do the same ! jacxx0 -
We haven't had any more snow since Friday, although it has been forcast. But it is absolutely baltic outside with the wind cutting through you. Although daft as it sounds what snow was on the ground is starting to melt today, where it is very thin.
DS2 and his friends have over the last couple of days built a fort shaped igloo type structure which all 8 of them can get into and be sheltered from the wind and it is also high enough that DS2 at 5'10" is protected when standing up. For safety they haven't put a roof on.
I today made chicken & veg and gammon & lentil soup, and have also cooked the mash and veggies to go with gammon slices for dinner. The soups will be portioned into old marg tubs and put in the freezer and then used for lunches for myself and DH or for after school/college snacks for the boys.
GQ we were also told we'd get "piles" from sitting on the step etc in the cold.
At school when doing dinner duty, I usually tell the children they'll get a poorly tummy if they sit on the playground.
My mum also used to attach our gloves/mittens via a cord through the sleeves of the coat; it is just not seen anymore.
Chilblains, I never really had any but my sister suffered badly, and I remember she used to put "snowpake" I think it was on them.My self & hubby; 2 sons (30 & 26). Hubby also a found daughter (37).
Eldest son has his own house with partner & her 2 children (11 & 10)
Youngest son & fiancé now have own house.
So we’re empty nesters.
Daughter married with 3 boys (12, 9 & 5).
My mother always served up leftovers we never knew what the original meal was. - Tracey Ulman0 -
It still hasn't stopped snowing here, all evidence that I was in the garden earlier has vanished, aside from the snowmouse (snowmen are boring) that I made, although he's just a shapeless blob now, poor mousey.
Kittens haven't ventured outside since around 10am, they're in for a shock when they wake up."Start every day off with a smile and get it over with" - W. C. Field.0 -

Hope everyone is well and warm.

Thank you OMO,
Could it be that steam locomotives were still being used back then?
Briefly, the thermal T-shirts finally hit my Aldi's store.:)What a good job I went out!
The only thing I have been done on this weekend is the Ginger capsules but they will last 100 days so that's only 4p per day but no more of them I have a jar of ground ginger in Aldi's for 49p. It would not be worth going back for a refund or to change them adding on bus fares etc...You always can learn something.
I can get all that I need on the town between Aldi's and Wilkinsons vitamins wise. At a fraction of the price.
Same Super Six veg in Aldi's...so it looks like its not changing until this coming Thursday."A government afraid of its citizens is a Democracy. Citizens afraid of government is tyranny!" ~Thomas Jefferson

I used to get murderous chilblains because I sat so close to the fire I was almost in it. The ointment in a round tin I think was called Snowfire, and Tiger Balm too. We lived on a hill and often ran out of milk or the Store milkman didn't manage up and we used Carnation milk in tea. Yeuch. I cycled to school in summer and got the school bus in winter, it was 4 miles.0

Popperwell I never thought of that.
Maybe they were not great for the environment, but they were surely better for the economy.0 -
It wasn't entirely unknown in our house to have condensed milk spread on bread, or even in a sandwich!!!! I don't remember hating it either, Cheers Lyn xxx.0
