  • Fuddle, yes they just got on with it. My Mum grew up on a small farm in the middle of nowhere in the Scottish borders. At 15 she was shipped down to Gloucester to look after her cousins after the aunt died in an accident. She taught me to knit, sew bake and cook and told me how to gut a pig! I learnt how to grow veg from my Dad and Grandad. I had quite an old style upbringing when I look back as Mum only went to work part time as a dinner lady at my junior school when I started.
Lynne, thanks, my two are fine, lying flat out after their tea. Aria's ear twitches when a 'screamer' goes off but Sky doesn't even flinch. Hope it is all over quickly for you. For my tuppence worth I think they should ban public sales of fireworks (apart from sparklers) and only have organised displays. It would save peoples money, both in buying them, the money it costs the emergency services and a lot of stress for animal owners. (I used to have a large horse that would try and jump out of her stable with them. Ended up turning her out for the week during nights with earplugs in and an old, sensible pony for company)
  • I am currently reading a wartime diary (non-fiction) that I downloaded off Amazon and what strikes me is that she is frequently stressed, angry, bitter, upset, annoyed... and yet her family said they honestly had no idea how she felt until they found her diaries after she'd died. It wasn't that women didn't feel this way... just that they were not allowed to express it, they were expected to 'know their place'. It's a fascinating read *tootles off to find the link*
  • You are speaking sweet music to my ears, Oh yes, no home fireworks and only organised displays on designated days would be the best solution possible. The selfish whatnames down here not only start in October but will probably go on sporadically until after New Year. They start letting the blooming things off in the evening as soon as it gets dark and it's not unusual for them to still be going off at midnight, I HATE IT ALL!!!! Mainly for the upset pets but some for the waste of money too, Cheers Lyn xxx.

Danetastic, thank you, I know that my petfood will always be welcomed at the rescue centre and that is indeed where it will probably end up! I was just pondering if a pet food bank might help prevent so many pets ending up there.

Quite! It strikes me that if you are going to almost literally set fire to your money you should at least be able to keep warm from doing it!!!

I have a feeling it was that way for many and they were exhausted and though officially the menfolk were supposedly doing the hard physical work, the womenfolk were doing the emotional/mental stuff(keeping the home together)and to be honest probably doing their fair share of physical tasks around the home...and again of course many relationships were loving but we know all too well how many were expected to have sex as a duty and had one child after another. Yet still had to run a household...

And being so exhausted probably had much to do with how many children were still born/mothers dies in childbirth not forgetting that any help medically(such as a birth)was performed by another family member or a neighbour and initially when Dr's started it had to be paid for and was probably very expensive and out of the question for many.

I guess on that score things have improved.

pops, your Amazon downloads stay with Amazon not necessarily on your PC. All mine are stored on Amazon and automatically download to my phone or PC, whatever one I choose. HTH

I come from a long line of battleaxes and I like the term myself  I'm not as tough as my ancestors though, by any means. They had it really tough, I remember my grandma's tales of how they coped with monthlies  And my nana was famous for her wartime meat and potato pie (you were lucky if you ever found any meat in it apparently ;))

My cat hates fireworks, she's like Docky - she squeezes into the gap between the back of the armchair and the wall and comes out crawling on her belly hours later for a reassuring cuddle. It's the same with thunderstorms. I've always had cats or dogs and she's the first one to react this badly - she was a stray though, and I think she had some tough times of her own before she landed in my garden.

I have 173 books on this laptop:eek:but if I try to move them or download them again it would probably say "You've already got this!" and not allow me to...perhaps I should use a portable Hard Drive, it would give more storage space and I could then plug it into the laptop or PC...

That is a bit annoying...I have some sites that allow you to put them anywhere and some of the sites also are delivered as mp3 files so you can read and listen to them but they are usually read in an American accent but hey, they are free...:)
