For people looking for something big to bulk out a hamper, I can reccommend Lidl's Pandoro. It's sort of like a lighter brioche that comes with a sachet of flavoured icing sugar that you put in the bag with the cake and shake over. I brought one yesterday and half of it is gone already. It's seriously yummy but very light and not heavy at all. I think it was £3.99 and it is in a large green cardboard box. I can see me having to go and buy some more as I think it will make a fab bread and butter pudding for Boxing Day at DPIL's house.

Thanks for the bird cake recipe and linky Fuddle... I might have a go at making my own as the sparrows and starlings gobble the round cakes up too fast and cost me an arm and a leg.

I should add that to fixing methods is typical of me... if in doubt, get the wool out! :rotfl:

You are as bad as me, last year when I made my Christmas cakes I couldn't find any string so I used crochet cotton to tie up the brown paper around the tins!

Our Ald! have three bird roasts in at the moment too, they also have a four bird roast too.

Am trying to get busy and sort out for tomorrow, with not doing Halloween we have always done bonfire night instead (even though I hate it) so kids are expecting a big thing. Cant summon any enthusiasm though :)

May drag myself to our town's fireworks display this year(if it rains I may decide otherwise)with all my thermals, warm coat, socks, hat, scarf and gloves I should be OK. And to help deaden the loud bangs I can use my earplugs...one of the best things I have ever purchased. Originally intended for the few recent concerts I have attended.

Being pop groups and me being so close to the stage I thought this will not do my hearing any good. I think I am the only one wearing any other than the performers. I can hear everything clearly but don't come out without dull sound or ringing in the ears...

Those three bird roasts are in Mr T's but have no idea how they compare to Aldi's and until November 8th I have no idea what they will have in stock when it is supposed to open. Would I buy one? Probably not...too big for one:(

Besides no space in the freezer...

Love that tree Fuddle! I feed the birds too, I invested in a sack of Nyger seeds and have a colony of goldfinches that feed every day, winter and summer! I put bird cakes out too, I buy the big tub of 50 at poundstretcher, but really must look into making my own. Do you have a recipe (sorry if I missed it in earlier posts)?

Me too love looking after the birds, I made my own feeding station, and most people that see it go home and also make one , which cost nothing......

    I take a saw with me up the road and cut 3 7 foot branches not too thick, leave all the twigs on, I dig 2 holes 7 foot apart and put a 7 foot branch in each, fill the holes with broken bricks, flowerpots or sim........Make sure its quite sturdy to hold the following;

Put the last 7 foot post across the top of other posts and screw them on, then get sum cup hooks and screw them in the across post, (goalpost affect)......:D...The wind can blow its heart out but the feeders will not fall off.........

Then I hang one feeder full of peanuts, one full of mixed seed, one full of teasel(nyger), 2 full of sunflower, and a hanging feeder for fatballs, it doesnt cost a penny and looks so authentic and rustic, and very original better looking than them spindly metal things you can buy from hardware stores for 20 quid on ............... .

Job done in 15 minuets , and the birds love it.....The reason I leave the twigs on , because alot of the smaller birds, ie; tits etc like to jump around the feeders and its nice to watch them enjoying it ,leaping about........

I put 2 long 18 inch feeders for sunflower seeds cos we seem to get through so many, loads of finches here , plus most birds like sunflower seeds.............Sit back and enjoy your free bird station, knowing it didt cost a penny is even better........:D

I also make my own birds cake with melted lard, add birds seed mix and porridge oats for protein , in yoghurt pots make small hole in bottom with skewer and thread string through and when set cut the pot away.........

Popperwell, I do agree that awful things have been, and are being, done in the name of religion - but in most cases that's not at all what the faith concerned intends, if you see what I mean. It's all gone a bit bonkers if people really believe visiting evil on others, or controlling them, is what their God wants.

I understand totally...the problem is how "Man" interprets a particular faith not the religion itself but because of that a whole faith is criticised or written off just as sometimes a whole race is...

where im from we dont talk about religion .........for obvious reasons! ANYWAY on another subject POPPERWELL did your new ALDI store open, i would love to go into an ALDI we dont have any over here but you all talk about them , they sound great!

If done with respect and talked of in general terms(and we don't condemn others or force our ways on others all can be well as we have hear today...but some are unable to do that...so quite understand where you are coming from...

Yes, Aldi's have a big sign up saying it opens on November 8th. It looks reasonably big(They say it is one of the largest in the area)I can see into the store now and they have some of the freezers and shelves erected...the checkouts but where most stores you go around clockwise this one you enter anti clockwise.

A local free sheet has asked for an official opening date claiming they have not been told and that the town centres owners don't know either. But they have a big sign up outside of the store.

I welcome it coming here but my food store and fridge/freezer/cupboards/pantry is so well stocked I am not sure when I will need to buy anything so I'll try and save some money for treats or perhaps put the heating on more unless I put it towards some of the specials Alsi's sell on Thursdays/Sundays...

I hope that it does well and doesn't disappear after a short stay...
