I don't know if it's more rude to wear jeans and a shirt to a funeral or to comment on the fact that someone looked "out of place" because they'd dressed properly. I am too aware of the Stanley Holloway Monologue "Brahn Boots" perhaps to say that someone shouldn't wear jeans - I guess it depends on circumstances

    http://monologues.co.uk/Brahn_Boots.html

When my beloved Auntie died, I wanted to wear red to the funeral because she was such an exuberant, bright, larger-than-life personality that black didn't seem right. My mum was scandalised and said it wasn't respectful. I did wear a red blouse with my black suit though.

Well, what a day I had yesterday. Dropped DD off at school at 8.00 and then had an hours journey to a rather intimidating meeting at 10.00. So thought I had an hour to kill to go for a coffee, freshen up and mug up on some of the content I needed to discuss. No such luck - horrendous traffic meant I arrived, rather flustered, at 9.55. Honestly, I don't know how people cope with daily commutes - my stress levels were through the roof just crawling through traffic.

Meeting was in a rather unusual and beautiful place (sorry, can't give any more info) which is a big tourist attraction - I had my eyes opened as to how a business like that is run. And how it could be better. Still they are going to pay me to run a couple of training sessions so it will be great experience and good for the CV - as well as some pennies into the holiday fund. In the end, I spent 4 hours doing a 70 mile round trip as I had to pop into the office on the way home. nightmare - and no marking done :(

So today is a working at home day - except OH is working at home too, he is currently on the school run. We should be OK here together without distracting each other - depends how bored we get :D We are going away in the caravan tomorrow for the weekend, so today's excitement is getting it out of winter storage.

I am planning a mediterranean veg casserole for tea - with HM bread. Never made it before (the casserole, not the bread :p), but had one when I went to CAT (Centre for Alternative Technology) the other week. I am amazed at how little meat we eat these days - last lot I had was some chicken on Sunday and then none for a few days before that. I don't seem to miss it. DS eats it as he doesn't like many veggie dishes, DD is a "flexitarian" - love that word, saw it in a book the other day, it means a vegetarian who eats meat occasionally. i think we might be turning into one too.

The same book introduced me to the concept of wormeries - has anyone got one? Are they very minging?

Best get on - i've a caravan to bring to life, a casserole and some bread to make, washing to juggle, 2 puddings to make for the weekend - oh and 30 assignments, 12 dissertations and 70 exam papers to mark! :rotfl:

    Have a good day all

  • SQ don't even read them, just put them in the delete bin and save yourself lots of anguish. It sounds as if you cannot do anything right for the rest of them, even if you do something right!!!!! Live your own life and enjoy your lovely little family, doing the things you do that make you feel a fulfilled and content whole person, the rest of the world can look after itself. It worked for me and I have never regretted making the decision to do just that! Hugs and more hugs Lyn xxx.

SQ you have to do what is right for you and your family (household) if I were to go in those circumstances I would be stressing about it so much and would most probably have an episode on the day so for me, in that situation, I couldn't do it and fully support you in your decision not to go.

My LL parked the JCB outside my house this morning, knocked on the door resulting in a fluffelled me as I took the dog to the door (big mistake as he's too execited) and lost him down the street. Cue LL running to coax him back. How embarrassing!. He knocked to get my number for a play area that he's building. In a few months they are looking for staff and called to get my number. Isn't that nice?

Still no pay but a little tax credits this morning. DH is paid next Wednesday. Nearly there! Oh and emptied my ISA. all £30 lol This is getting ridiculous now though. Hoping for ACAS to call today.

    I think I have food poisoning :(

Had some chicken on Tuesday but unsure as all the others that ate with me are fine.

I have however been sick 9 times since 6pm last night and not surprisingly my chest and stomach is now in agony :(

I'm on water at the moment, but I just bring it back up.

Anyone have any tips? Luckily my mum has took LO for the day as I was concerned if it was a contagious bug. I just feel like poo!!!

    :) Morning all.

VJsMum, I used to be a commuter. I lasted 4 days before I got a Mon-Fri lodging arrangement. It was no dearer and a lot less aggro and wear and tear on my 13 y.o. car.

Re wormeries, I have tried with them several times and it hasn't worked out for me, despite diligently following directions. But I know people who swear by them. Wormeries mustn't have citrus or meat/ fish in them and they mustn't be allowed to get too hot or too cold.

Amusingly, the liquid you drain off from the tap of a wormery is recommended (in dilution) for your houseplants. I have to say it's the rankest smelling stuff I have ever encountered, even in dilution, and if you're prepared to bring that into your home, you're beyond bonkers.:rotfl:

One pal who has a teeny tiny courtyard has a "bokashi bin" which may be another option for you to consider.

I have no outside space at the flat so take my rotables up to the allotment and sling them into the "compost Dalek".

SQ your sister needs to be treated as toxic at this time. Try not to engage to avoid being hurt further. Maybe things will get better in the future, maybe they won't, but you can only live each day as it comes.

nuttyp, I was flabbergasted at the idea that dressing smartly to a funeral is disrespectful. Surely turning up in jeans is a mark of disprespect, not the other way around? Even the poorest of the poor make an effort to dress tidily for a funeral.

Been thinking in random moments of a family party scheduled for later this month. Landmark birthday for a beloved relative, but will mean seeing Certain People, esp one person who I have avoided for the past 25 years. On past form, she will be venomous, and I will have to smile sweetly to keep the peace for the Beloved Relative and the wider family, whilst fantasing about smacking her upside the head.

Families, eh? I'm blessed with my immediate famiy but there are some in the outer orbits who I would gladly never see again......

Right, time for more tea and then a bit of interwebulating before the late shift.

ETA (((((peanut)))))) being sick is the pits and I hope you soon feel better. You may have food poisoning even if the others ate the same chicken and are OK; did you all eat of the same part of the bird? I would leave it a few more hours and if you haven't stopped vomiting, call the Dr. Unless you have some pre-existing medical condition or are pregnant, in which case call now.

If you have some of the chicken left, and details of the packaging, you may want to call the council in whose area the bird was purchased, and talk to their Environmental Health/ Food Safety people. You always deal with the council who covers the area of the shop, not the area you live in, should they be different.

We have a lot of this at work as some of the big supermarkets "in" my city are actually just over the city limits and thus the responsibility of another local authority.

If you can, try taking tiny sips of water. Some old school authorities recommend water which has been boiled first and allowed to cool. If you have cola in the house, try pouring some out, letting it go flat, and sipping that. If you can phone a pharmacist/ get someone to visit one on your behalf, they may be able to recommend some OTC remedies.

Remember, if you're really concerned, the Dr should be your first call.

    Hope you feel better soon.

Fuddle, hoping for your call (or your wages!) today.
SQ I'm sorry you had to deal with that from your sister. I think you're doing the right thing by stepping back and letting them get on with it.
Peanut I agree just try to keep yourself hydrated with little sips, and if it hasn't passed in 24 hrs go to the doctor.
Nutty I'm flabbergasted they would wear jeans to a funeral. I don't think it's absolutely necessary to wear black but you should at least look smart.

Very windy here so I've wrapped the rain cover around the outside hutch for the bunnies. I had to put them outside as I couldn't get any work done from having to remove them from the sofa every 2 minutes (slight toilet training issues re. sofa!). It's a chicken coop so it has a perfectly nice cosy/shaded bit but I know they won't take themselves in there.

Sounds like Norovirus - highly contagious

Hugs for you, it is horrible but over quickly - my DD had it 2 weeks ago. I doubt it's food poisoning as I would have thought Tuesday was too long ago. I too thought I had food poisoning a couple of years ago, but it was norovirus, by which time i'd given it to DD :(

If it is norovirus you will be stopping vomiting soon, but I would take extra precaution over hand washing and anti - baccing everything. It'll take a few days to get your appetite back.

Oh peanut, you poor thing, hope you feel better soon.

Re- funerals, we are O/S and thats how things are done, dress smartly in black unless the family request otherwise ie, bright colours to celebrate a life. We are at a funeral today of an friend who reached 86 and we will definately be wearing black. There is to be a mass for 1 1/2 hours so OH has decided we will just go to the graveside as its too much for him after a bad week. As the cemetary is at the back of our house we can stroll round.

MrsLW I love the way you put things, it really makes people feel as if they are making good choices in focusing on their little families and sod the world - my sentiments exactly.

I have 2 bokashi bins and they are the cleanest little compocters going - no whiff :D Its strange at first digging seemingly whole veggies into the garden or chucking them in the big composter but the breakdown immeadiately. I couldnt stand a wormery and anyway OH would be nicking all the worms for fishing.

Fuddle did you think the Ll had come to turn the garden over for you :rotfl: How nice of him to think of you, he obviously see's what we see - a very kind person who loves kids. I do hope your money comes soon, you are doing really well at getting through this.

Hi, thanks everyone reguarding the messages. I think my OH family is like kidcats. I decided a long time ago to have very little contact, and the only time we seem to be in the same place are funerals, weddings etc. I find it so hard at times, my ibs is bad still due to all the stress and worry. Its true you can pick your friends and not your family.

Have made tea for everyone, aldi reduced meat £1.79 for some stewing steak, a few mushrooms left over in the fridge and some gravy all put in the slow cooker. We have some new potatoes from aldi too. Only bought a few bits today as Monday I am going to scarborough with OH in a caravan. We are going on a sun holiday, so hopefully it will be a good break for us.

    Take care everyone x
