Hello all
Just de-lurking to say that you can get head lice treatment for children on prescription if you phone the doctors surgery and childrens prescriptions are free.
All three of mine had them at the same time and if I hadn't got it free it would have cost me a fortune !
Hope this helpsI almost had a psychic boyfriend but he left me before we met.0 -
Hello everyone,
Having a quick bite to eat before nipping out to town with some errands and hoping time to pop into a couple of charity shops before I collect my two whippersnappers.
Busy over Sat/Sun doing various odds and ends. Little more gardening done amongst other things. Our usual cattery (not that we use it often) was booked up so we visited another on a friend's recommendation - such lovely people and an area we would love to live if our income quadrupled. Hard to drag DS6 away, he had great fun talking to each and every cat guest there.
Then yesterday we laid down tools and headed to the coast. We are only 10 miles or so away for nearest beach though we headed out further to a quieter spot but the traffic is awful on a hot day. We had a little traffic but left early enough to miss most of it - on the way back it was solid for miles coastbound. Also parked in a free area near some shops and saved a few pounds, only an extra 5 mins to walk so allowed a little smugness to infuse us! Spent the saved pennies on icecreams all round and no other spends as took a picnic. Had a lovely time with a football and frisbee. Lots of other happy people playing games, walking dogs, paddling and swimming etc. So long since we had a day out in warm weather. Bliss!
Fuddle DS8 loves old Enid and DS6 starting to read them too.(Ds8 also reads stuff like Harry Potter and Ds6 reads star wars chapter books so they like all sorts!) I have only read a few odd pages but I was surprised that they were mainly just about kids having adventures, girls included - one of them very independent and didn't seem too un-PC - yes they are dated in terms of language eg. jolly japes and what the kids liked to do/eat etc but that helps to transport them into a different era. I'll look at the books DS8 is currently reading this eve as there are lots of titles and let you know the ones that seem ok. Also their school has some Enid Blyton books in their library so they must be ok for primary school kids?

Afternoon all - I tried to post earlier but my battery on my phone died.
Fuddle - I also have had prescription headlice stuff when DD18 had them years ago, it was stronger than over the counter ones but I just couldnt shift them any other way - she has really curly hair.
OH is in redundancy talks this week - odds are he will be out by Friday:(0 -
Had productive day yesterday and got six machine loads of laundry done and dried outside.
Went for walk to supermarket about tea time to look for bargains and forgot my feet had swollen in the heat and wore shoes instead of sandals. Hirpled home with cuts on heels and blisters
I seem to remember a few people on here need gluten free or specialist foods sometimes so want to mention that AF are doing several GF items just now at a much cheaper price.
I am making savoury bulgar wheat for lunch with a little bit of salmon from yesterday ( ten pounds worth on offer for five, reduced to £2.50 then down to 99 pence for the pack).
I want to use up the mince so planning shepherd's pie or else spag bol for tonight.
If wearing sandals will help my feet then might try supermarket tonight.
Hugs to all and hope fuddle gets paid and monnagran has a great holiday."This site is addictive!"

fuddle - the current treatment advice (or at least, the advice 12 months ago when I last worked in a chemist) was to do a full treatment, then a follow up full treatment the week after. Anecdotal stuff from parents I've chatted to suggests doing the conditioner and nit comb method throughout that week too. Obviously try and get the lotions prescribed for the littlies if you can, I will ask OH (he still works in the pharmacy of the same chemist chain) if there's anything new and miraculous about when he gets home. If your children have especially thick or curly hair, the mousses can be easier to use than lotions or spray too.
I used to catch nits every time they went round our school - thick wild curly hair, washed every day. I had no chance of avoiding them!
All is well here, have spent this most glorious of days indoors doing a full spring clean. Only the kitchen and bedroom left to go, putting them off now mind, had enough! It's a whopping 20C in my flat today, even with all windows open, why can't I have a garden to enjoy it in?!0 -
The Dockling and I have just had the most fun walk with Charlie the retriever and his Mumi and her little grandaughter who is almost 2. She was meant to go to sleep but as is the way of these things, she woke up completely and wanted to know what everything was that we walked past. We went across the common, through the woods and back along the footpaths giving her a botany lesson and teaching her the names of all the flowers we passed, which bless her, she tried her best to say - a 2 year old trying to say Alkanet is cute beyond belief!!! Best bit of the walk, naughty Aunty Lyn showing her how to blow a dandelion clock - we may have added substantially to seed dispersal in our area, but we've laughed until our sides hurt - what a lovely way to spend an afternoon, Cheers Lyn xxx.0

Good morning Lyn, good morning everyone
Another glorious day.
I found further headlice in DD's hair last night. I used the last of the headr1n and smothere her head only to find one live and kicking when doing her hair last night. Her hair shafts are covered in eggs. This solution isn't moving them. At a bit of a loss at what to do other than thoroughly comb through her hair nightly and wash nightly with tea tree added to shampoo.
In taking this headlice hard because I'm blaming myself for working those hours and not spending time on ensuring hairs were washed or brushed through properly of an evening and rushing about on a morning. Had I been at home I am damn sure I would have picked up on it earlier and we wouldn't have as much as a severe issue now.
Still it's there and happens to mams all over eh? do I use almost half the house keeping on some solution? What would my grandma do?
I'm baking baguettes todaywe're having cheese sandwiches with salad. Thinking about what cheapest salad items there are? Cucumber and tomatoes?
Going to walk to the library later (where will pick up salad items) as I have reserved nigelissima. I like Italian cooking, think its reasonably fair on ingredients and cost and perfect for tea of an evening in spring and summer.
Enid Blyton? I have reserved a copy on wishing tree or faraway tree for eldest. 1) in worried that Enid's beliefs at the time are not reflected today an may influence DD's thinking about social norms or cultures. I didn't read any of Enid's work when I was a kid so can't call it but... She's a classic and I know Seven Stories (fantastic children's resource in Newcastle) have/are doing an exhibition on her. What do you think? Oh and 2) she's asked for Michael morpurgo books so wonder if Enid may be too tame for her tastes!
So many little chores to do in the house today but thankfully not the ones that make you feel overwhelmed.
Also, concerned about eldest DD not being able to swim yet. Has anyone taught their children to swim and if so, how? There's no way I can book lessons right now but I'm wanting to put aside money to take her every couple of weeks or so.
Will be emailing a school office for another teaching assistant post late this afternoon too. Thinking of looking into next council area but may be too far again in terms of petrol, spending time with girls.
In a good place though. Quite calm and serene today and I'm like that.
Don't blame yourself - headlice are just one of those unavoidables of life, I think. When my DD had them I would (nit) comb through her hair 3 times a day  Once before she went to school, once when she got home and once before she went to bed. I took great delight in popping the bleeders between my finger and thumb - must be what GQ is like with the slugs.
Can't stand Enid Blyton myself, though DD did like the St Clare's books. But then I can't stand AA Milne or Beatrix Potter either - shockingly bad writing but lovely characters. For once Disney did AA Milne a favour. Michael Morpurgo is great though. My DS loved "The Butterfly Lion" and "Cool" and the other doggy one, "Private peaceful" is one of the best books I have ever read but might be upsetting for little-ies. Have you looked at Jacqueline Wilson?I wanna be in the room where it happens0 -
Afternoon toughies
Glad to see you've all had glorious weather this weekend - can't believe how fab it is, really lifts the soul! We've done plenty of gardening, the littlies have run themselves ragged, we've eaten outside, and generally had a mini holiday, which we all needed. we tried to go to a big park in a nearby town, but parking what a complete and utter joke, so we came back here and went in the local park for free (bar 4 ice creams!). Took DD to the same park for a picnic and play today, the kids were falling asleep on the bus home! Ours had a late night last night, so it will be an early tea, bath and bed, so I've got some evening left, DH working late so I can get some sewing done.
I had some Enid Blyton's as a child, but mum hated them for some reason. I lost my beloved copy of The Magic Faraway Tree in a house move and never found a replacement. They are dated, but quite innocent, and actually a good example of how to play out, IMO! :rotfl:
Nits is going round here, too, ours haven't succumbed yet but am checking daily, it's the only reason DD will let me brush her hair, so am making the most of it!

When my kid's head lice were at their worst I used to nit pick every morning and evening with a dry very fine nit comb. That meant I got the eggs as they hatched and used to find some minuscule ones. I did this for about 4 weeks.
Dont forget to check you and hubby - I caught them and went to the hairdressers with them - the shame!I must not fear. Fear is the mind-killer.
Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration.
I will face my fear. I will permit it to pass over and through me. When it has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path.
When the fear has gone there will be nothing. Only I will remain.0 -
I got them once at school...I think nearly everyone does at least once...wouldn't these days seeing my hair has disappeared so much...:(
I hate receiving post most of the time its bills and bad news...today I was told I was £200 in arrears on council tax. Going back over two months...why do they wait so long before writing?
Phoned them...it was an error and should never have been sent out:mad:and they can't understand why it was."A government afraid of its citizens is a Democracy. Citizens afraid of government is tyranny!" ~Thomas Jefferson
