I could never do PE because of a bad knee problem, I always ended up watching/collecting lost balls/raking the long jump sand pit and other thrilling activities, I would have probably done better at school if I was allowed to study instead.
Then by that logic we should get rid of PE for all and make sure all children spend all their time reading books.... If you were allowed to study other subjects instead of the PE that was on the curriculum, why not other students? Why should children who are good at one subject not walk out of the lesson to put more time to ones that they struggle with? Simply because it's a one size fits all solution where everyone has to do all the required lessons. That's just the way it works.

I really wish school was about more than exams and that things like exercise, teamwork and open minds were encouraged. I realise that the curriculum isn't that flexible but I wish more parents and children would see the value in activities that don't relate immediately to exam marks. I guess this is a sign of the times and the way education has gone, but I really don't like it!

But 'education' and 'preparing for real life' can be two very different things.

On the 'education' front, given that standards of literacy have fallen so far, people seem to get by without any basic knowledge of grammar. Hence 'should of' etc; 'I have went',and so on.

Spell checkers will help with things like octagons and dodecahedrons.

Preparing for the 'real-life' battles over the office air conditioning and heating can be tough. Especially when your office has a dress code.

But, if your school years have conditioned you to the idea that you must wear certain clothing, no matter how warm/cold your working environment..

You have a head start in terms of dealing with the problem.

I do see where you are coming from - I just disagree. your point of view is valid in many respects. I just believe that we should ensure that children have a solid grounding in the 'basics' before moving them on later in life.

Are we talking about the 'basics' of literacy and numeracy?

If so, then I agree that children should have a solid grounding in these things. We could also expand the argument to take in the idea that it is actually OK to correct flagrantly incorrect grammar in internet posts ('should of', for example).

If we're talking about the 'basics' of life, then I also agree that children should have a solid grounding in these things.

It may be that we are actually in complete agreement.

In my last couple of years of school I did minimal PE because of a problem with my knee ligaments and I had a letter from the hospital stating this. However we did other activities like bowling in the winter which was fine as I could sit down, but our summer activities were tennis, athletics and rounders, which I was allowed to sit out as I couldnt run.
I sat in the porch overlooking the field in my uniform and just did work from other lessons. It was very rare for anyone to sit out PE but I was lucky - my PE teacher was also my form tutor and she knew about all the medical intervention/tests etc I was having so she was understanding. This was the height of summer so it wasnt so bad but I cant imagine any child being forced outside in their kit when they clearly couldnt do PE - that's terrible!

One of the rules that I could not understand and which really annoyed the pupils and me, is that in the summer they must wear their blazers and ties, even in the searing heat!!

    .

I work in a school (not as a teacher though) and my 3 children have went through the same school as pupils and I have to say that this irritates the life out of me!

During the warmer spells of weather the pupils are made to wear their tie , a shirt , jumper and blazer. They are told off if they are seen not to be wearing them...however , you will then see the teachers strolling about the school wearing their loose , flimsy , floaty summer dresses and strappy sandels!

I have also seen female teachers wearing very short skirts. To me this is hypocitical.
The loopy one has gone :j
