Any P.E. teachers about? I have a question.

My Grandsons school is prob an exception - as they have a large 'special needs unit' which GS goes to but joins mainstream when able.0

Just wondering if the OP is going to answer this>

I didn't answer it originally as I thought you were being provocative tbh. Your post was not related to my question, it simply questioned my actions. My actions are irrelevant to the question, hence I ignored you.
However, since you've asked again and clearly want to make a point, I will now reply.
Did you notice the time I started this thread? It was 6pm (ish). It followed a chat I had with my daughter after school. Since school is closed at that time and I had no personal phone number for the PE teacher to reach him/her at night, I asked on here in the hope there might be a teacher floating about who could answer my (general) question.
Clearly if my question had concerned our school only, then this thread would have been of no use but since I am under the impression this 'policy' (term used loosely) applies in many schools, I wondered if there was some sort of guidelines a teacher had to follow that was set down by the Education Dept, or if there was something else I was unaware of that meant they had to follow certain things or if it was just a personal decision by the teacher concerned. I refer to the 'aspects I may not be aware of' comment in the original post.
I hope that answers your query.
Is it P.E. that you teach?Herman - MP for all!

standing shivering at the side of a pitch sounds like something from a Dickens book
our 3 have never stood outside in kit or otherwise when not participating in PE, my son left school in June, so collectively have 39 years of schooling between them
as a long serving parent helper, i never saw any child do this
they would go the library in the school and read, or when in high school do some homework or research for a project well thats what they SHOULD have been doing

Im not a teacher or a parent so my opinion is probably all moo but I remember being a (bit of a cheeky) teenager at school and can clearly remember being full of cold and asking the teacher if I could stay inside and study instead of doing p.e as I didn’t want my cold to get worse by doing games outside in the drizzle and cold. She (obviously) said no so I calmly informed her that I would not be participating nor would I be getting changed nor would I be standing outside in the cold when I was ill and if she had any issues with that she was more than welcome to either phone my mom or speak to the head of year who ‘I am sure would rather me miss 1 p.e lesson and sit in the library which was supervised than have days off school because my cold was made worse by your actions’ (I did say I was a cheeky sod!).
In my opinion, if a child is visibly ill or has a note excusing them from p.e they should be allowed to use that time constructively – this could even be by reading text books and writing essays on different sports, what exercise works what muscle groups etc, so they are not getting out of p.e to catch up on homework.0 -
If I had money for the amount of times that a child told me that they couldn't do P.E. but had spent lunchtime running around the playground or stayed and did an after school sporting activity I'd be rich. (I'm talking about Primary School by the way).
I have never got a child changed into their P.E. kit and sat outside on a freezing day but quite honestly cannot see the problem with them watching the lesson. Most lessons are based on specific areas, e.g. tennis and develop as the weeks go along. Do I let the child watch and learn or let them sit in a room reading and then waste 29 children's time the following week by going over the previous week's lesson again?
As previously mentioned there are ways that they can be involved during lessons even if they don't have their kit- timing when doing athletics, evaluating during paired work, etc, etc.
There are some parents who freely discuss their opinions with me but in 12 years I have never had a parent question why their child has watched a P.E. lesson when unable to do it. One year I actually had a child with a broken arm ask if he could come to the swimming pool and watch the lesson that he was missing with the class. I checked with his parents that they were okay with this and he came along.0 -

Perhaps that's why?
Well as no-one has said there are any guidelines to be followed, I'm assuming this is down to individual teachers and their choices.
Like everything else in life there are good and maybe not quite so good versions so perhaps it's as simple as that.
I don't have a downer on all P.E. teachers btw, my middle one had a teacher that was an absolute star and got the best out of the kids, I credit her with fostering his love of all things sporty.
I just have a downer on what I see as stupid 'for the sake of it' rules. (In any subject.)Herman - MP for all!

I struggle with senseless rules too! It seems some schools/teachers feel the need to flex their muscles and show them who is boss!
Problem is, children don't learn anything from an approach like this in my opinion.0 -

I quite agree.
It has been very hard at times to rationalise some of the school rules.
One of the rules that I could not understand and which really annoyed the pupils and me, is that in the summer they must wear their blazers and ties, even in the searing heat!!
My daughter is a hard working girl who never tried to get away with anything at school, but she could not wait to leave school and go to college and I believe that the pettiness of some of the rules was a factor in this.0 -
All I can say is that getting a doctors note to get off P.E. is a bit extreme and I am guessing any doctor would more than likely laugh at the suggestion. I know my 10 year when she doesn't do P.E. they are kept in class or asked to help the head teacher with something.
I guess it's to do with government policy that children even when not capable of doing p.e. are encouraged to be more active. Well at least today children aren't made to p.e. in their underwear if they forget their kit like I was when I was younger, now that was embarrassing when you were made to wear Y fronts.0
