First success earlier today at a little place called Malinka in Reading that we already use about once a week. The wife had to push for them to accept Amex and the shop assistant called her manager first but it was accepted, so in theory I'm already £5 up :)

I need to go look for who is participating in my area :p I think the reason many small shops don't take Amex is because they charge a higher transaction fee than Visa, MC etc

Edit: found a couple of places I normally buy stuff from, need to make sure I go this month then :)

I've found quite a few places say they'll take Amex but when it comes to pay the card mysteriously doesn't work. But a VISA/Mastercard does. I suggest if going to a restaurant just for this offer, you ask to pay upfront, maybe settling any extras in cash...

I was once in a curry house and they brought the bill over in one of those leatherette folders with a shiny American Express logo on the front. I whipped out the trusty Amex and the waiter said, "oh, we don't take American Express."
  • Do you know how to get a map of where to use your Amex for this offer. When I click on the link in this thread I get a form to register my card. When I complete the form it states that my card is already registered, which I have not done. The only thing I can think of is that it is accepting the same registration as for four square. Any help would be great thanks

just be aware that not all shops on the map take american express. so make sure you ask the store whether they will accept the card first before deciding to buy anything...

You get an email notification from AmexNetwork@email.amexnetwork.com within minutes of the card transaction. I have now had 2 emails subject title "Thank you for Shopping Small" and a message:
Congratulations. You have used your Card ending in ***** to Shop Small. You will receive your £5 statement credit in 3-5 working days.

So that's 2 out of 3 so far and £10 up. Malinka didn't work yesterday for some reason (no email received) but my local curry house worked this evening, as did a local pharmacy earlier today.
  • My bank charges me an extra penalty fixed sum for ANY credit card transaction it processes under £10......plus the usual 3.5% transaction charge. The Amex minimum spend of £5 is stupid. I have had customers today attempting to spend £5 in order to get their £5 back, I refused, citing the above. There will be hundreds, maybe thousands, of Amex card holder across the county, attempting to 'cash in' in order to steer themselves a total freebie. Amex has done small businesses no favours in this regard. We need GENUINE repeat customers to walk through our doors, not a feeding frenzy of opportunism.
