I bought one of these on friday and finally got to look at it today but cannot get any further than plugging it in as the red exclamation mark is permanently on and the only reference to it i can find in instructions or online is that it lights to alert you to error message on display but there is no message on the display. So frustrating ! back to Staples i fear.WHOOOOSHHHHHHHHH……..

It wont even let me get as far as setting language, i did go ahead and installed cartridges to see if it would clear the red exclamation but no luck and no error message or any text at all on the display to help.WHOOOOSHHHHHHHHH……..

I've got the same router as you and found I had to change no wireless settings whatsoever. I set the language, manually entered the passcode to connect the printer to the network and then installed the software on the laptop.
I suggest you unplug the printer and start again. If possible, follow the instructions for a factory reset.TL0 -

Red exclamation mark???? No colour LCD on mine.;)
imsi gave the clue.
You are supposed to set it up ( language etc.) using the LCD, BEFORE connecting to PC.ac's lovechild0 -

I've got an Epson Stylus Photo Printer (R220) which I use for photos (it's actually sitting on the floor right now until I find somewhere else to put it, as the brother's nicked its space). The Brother is more of a home/small office machine (prints documents, scans and copies). It does print photos, but I haven't tested it to see how good the quality is. The Epson R220 uses 6 carts, whereas the Brother uses 3. Both are cheap on compatibles.
thanks for your comments. i do have an epson r300 but i wanted to buy this to replace my lexmark x83. ideally, i'd like to replace both and just have the one printer as space is a bit limited in my household so if it printed photos then it'd be great. btw, is there a best/safe way of disposing of empty epson ink cartridges?0 -
The red exclamation mark the poster is talking about is not on the LCD. It's on the left hand side of the LCD. It comes on when there's an error (such as a paper jam). It also comes on when you first plug the machine into the mains to set it up, as the machine needs ink carts. Mine came on to tell me to insert the carts when I first plugged mine in. If the OP has already connected the machine to the PC without doing any of the initial set up, and running the driver software first, this could be the reason why he hasn't got anything showing up on his LCD.In a rut? Can't get out? Don't know why?

Space is limited in my house, too...hence the Epson sitting on the floor at the mo. I'm going to stick a shelf up somewhere on the wall, then dump it up there!
I think there are dump bins for old carts in Tesco. I know Tesco won't give points for Epson carts, though. Have a look next time you go shopping to see if there's a cart recycle box in the supermarket. In a rut? Can't get out? Don't know why?

Hello,
Hoping somebody who has one can help me.
Is the "Wireless" connection "Always On" if the machine is powered up, or is there an on / off switch for it, or on / off selection via the LCD menu.
Essentially, is the printer emitting wifi signals at all times when turned on, or can you control this ?
Thanks for any help !0 -

Yes correct that is the red light ! It came on as soon as i plugged the printer in and it has not been connected to my PC or network at all.
No error message showing and therefore i cannot take any steps to clear it, as previously stated i did go ahead and instal the ink to see if it would get rid of the exclamation light but no luck.
I have just spoken to Brother support and they say it sounds like a faulty screen and a replacement printer is being sent by courier, very helpful.WHOOOOSHHHHHHHHH……..
