A neighbour from a long way down our street has taken to parking his lorry opposite our house when he gets home at 3am. It's a lorry with a loud reversing alarm, so we're being woken up every time. :(

He then walks round the corner to his own house - why he can't park there I don't know. Maybe it wakes his own family up.

I'm hoping it's a short-term thing and he'll go back to working days soon (don't know him at all).

Aside from having a polite word if I see him, is there anything I can do? He's parking legally on the road, so I'm guessing not. It's a narrow road and the lorry does make it awkward (dustbin lorry was up on the pavement this morning going round it) but it's not blocking the road.

I do appreciate that people have to make a living and he probably has no choice in working unsociable hours, but we both have to get up for work in the morning. :(

  • If he's parking legally there's not much you can do. Does he need to reverse to park? If not ask him not to reverse.
  • Maybe do a bit of digging on the company. The operators licence may prevent parking away from the base.

It's a short section of road with no houses on that side, so people park there (4-5 cars fit). Normally there are a couple of cars there overnight so he can't just drive straight up unfortunately. Need to reverse to get close in to the kerb.

Last night he spent 15-20 minutes attempting to reverse parallel park before accepting that the space was too small and going somewhere else. :(

We don't know what company it is. It's a knackered ancient lorry with no livery.

Is he? What sort of lorry is it? Check with your local authority and/or contact the operator.
  • Can you and your neighbours not park there?

Get the company details off the operators licence, next to the tax disc..

Did think about moving our cars over there so there's no space but he got so close to our neighbour's car last night when trying to park that I'd be worried about leaving ours there! (Plus they're both insured as parked on our drive overnight).

Not a lorry expert. It's not an articulated one, but I suspect it's bigger than I'd be allowed to drive with a car license. Front just says Leyland DAF 45 130 Turbo(??). Just had a look. No tax displayed as the disc has been put in the window inside out. There is an operator's thing, thanks. We're in Essex and it's a company in Northern Ireland. So maybe it won't be here for long! Just googled but I can't find the company. The license says "XYZ Company c/o James" but if James' surname is listed then it's covered up by the barcode at the bottom.

Never seen the guy to have a word as he goes out while we're at work during the day and at 3am we're just trying to get back to sleep, but if it carries on I'll go out and have a word (might come across grumpy at that time of night though!). I assume that lorry drivers can't turn off their reversing alarms...
  • Buy some earplugs then.

What is his street like? Is there space? If so then your first instinct might be right - he just doesn't want to wake his own family. If not, he's just in a bit of a pickle.

If he is just a bit stuck and closing the gap isn't an option, could you widen it? Make sure there is enough space for him to get in super quick and sling his hook?

Apart from that, the only options I can see are confronting him at 3am in your jammies or nipping round his house at 7am and waking him up!
What if there was no such thing as a rhetorical question?

I already sleep with earplugs and the alarm is still waking me up. :(

As I said, I do appreciate that people have to work different hours and I don't want to be a pain. But I can't take this every night. :( My husband and I both have medical conditions that are exacerbated by fatigue. :(
