I have just managed to get through to the dealer, and after having the phone put down on me 3 times, spoken to to a person who has said that they will come and collect the car, repair it and return it. I refused, saying that I want the money back as the car is unfit to be driven, and I do not want it. He has agreed to collect it and return our money. He is going to ring me back to sort it out. Whether he does or not is another thing altogether, but we shall see. Many thanks everyone for all your help/advice. Lets hope we get the result we want.
If they do show up, have you ever thought about wearing a shirt with a front pocket in which you can put a phone, and video (or at worst audio record) the whole event without them knowing, just in case they start with delivery fee and stocking charge, and the extra scratches that have appeared etc?

Insist on cash (or any other form of payment that cannot be cancelled or claimed back once they have the car)

Just to let everyone know - the car has been collected and our money refunded (in cash). Not without a bit of a 'heated discussion' - but sorted now. They wanted me to sign that any damage/accident/speeding etc was our responsibilty - but I wouldn't. I just wrote out that the car had been collected, the time and date, and that the money had been refunded, and got them to sign it as well as me. So - a lesson well learned .- and I know that we have been very lucky Many, many thanks to everyone who helped and advised me - I really appreciate it.

Gutted for you. Hard lesson to learn. Make sure you insist on a cash refund. Do you know any big blokes who can be around if they do turn up? If they don't keep going down the TS route. As horrid as it is to say if you don't get your cash back you may save someone else the grief after having read this post. Next time you buy a car get an AA inspection - there's some lovely cars around for less than a grand at the moment it's a buyers market you have to be careful but if your'e fussy you will find something. Let us know how you get on.

Cross posted with you! So pleased for you, and well done for not signing anything. Now go to a reputable local garage and ask if they have any cheerful little part ex's I have done this in the past and had some lovely cars (after being ripped off to many years ago!) Looking at the pics of the car in the link it looks like it's been in a flood!!

Well done Laineyf..you did well and were very very lucky.

Dont be afraid to walk away from a car if it doesnt feel right. There are plenty more out there. Buy with your head, not your heart.
Feudal Britain needs land reform. 70% of the land is "owned" by 1 % of the population and at least 50% is unregistered (inherited by landed gentry). Thats why your slave box costs so much..
