Should have stayed in chimney sweeping - you could have mugged a lot more of the uniformed public then you can do the state
Only on here, there's plenty of people who do have a clue what they are talking about, giving good free advice
If someone took your advice on carbon monoxide poisoning to heart - they would be dead whilst waiting for the thick black fumes0 -

Seem to have gone off topic slightly with Manoverboard again turning someones real concerns into his own crusade. :rotfl:
Nickson: I think you've been given some good advice about getting either an experienced and qualified chimney sweep or Hetas installer to come and take a look.
We had a problem with a recently installed stove and flue, done by a Hetas registered builder, but ending up not actually being Building reg compliant. They actually turned up trumps, and agreed completely that they'd made a mistake, and put it right immediately, and free of charge.
I think you are holding a winning hand in not having yet paid the builder for the full fitting. If the worst comes to the worst, I would get a detailed quote of what is wrong with an estimate of cost to put right from a trusted Hetas installer , and if the original installer refuses to correct the mistakes, deduct that cost from his bill! :T
You certainly need to get it sorted, as with no Completition Certificate to say its Building Reg compliant, you would be on very shakey ground if you needed to make an insurance claim against it in the future.
Another good site with a whole section purely on Woodburning is www.thegreenlivingforum.net There are a few very knowledgable installers on there that are more than happy to share their experience and knowledge with us newbies! :A0 -
Have to say I was very surprised to hear you'd had a chimney sweep business! Sweeps are generally considered to be pretty clued up and to know what they're doing - and I'd say that as a bunch, they tend to have a much better reputation than fitters for instance. However, much of the advice you've dished out has been wrong, or even dangerous - I can only assume that you were a "DIY sweep". I just hope that whoever you sold the business to is making a better job of looking after their customers than you did. I'm not one for having a go at anyone unless it's warranted, but when someone is making the silly claims that you do as well as giving out potentially dangerous advice to people who come here looking for help and answers - it's really not on. You're definitely not what I, or any of the guys in the trade I know, would call a sweep.0

Entirely agreed with just one caveat. I wouldn't trust the opinions of all the installers on that forum.
There is a great deal to be said for user-based experience, rather than the blandishments of the 'Hetas gang'.0 -

Agree with that A.Badger - you often get contradictory advice, either from forums or from a Hetas guy visiting you, which just ends up confusing you even more!
I'm a great believer in going with gut feeling; and research. - If you don't feel something has been done right, and to your satisfaction - then persevere with it until you are happy.
That worked for us! :j0 -

The guy who bought my business gave up within a year! I still receive calls from people whose problem is that sweeps these days refuse to move stoves in order to clean the chimney.0 -

And those sweeps are doing the right thing, stoves should not need moving once they have been fitted unless of course they are bodged in, if you move a stove once its been installed and signed off then in effect you invalidate that certificate and if anything goes pete tong then its YOUR fault.
A good sweep worth their money will always walk away from a job like that as said before, if you were moving stoves etc then good for you - it just shows you know even less and are in my eyes a bodger. You may click thanks if you found my advice useful0
