Thank god you're not an air traffic controller!

'Stress' is relative to the individual - one person's stress is another's business-as-usual.
    :hello:
  • It never crossed my mind to tip the delivery driver, but then I don't tip any one very often any way!

They all get paid at least the minimum wage.

No one has ever tipped me either.

I would if I could. I'm terrified of flying, even though I do it quite regularly. It doesn't help that OH works in the airline industry so is constantly telling me what the weird noises mean. Once on a plane when waiting for the plane to start taxiing he calmly pointed out that the refuelling guys had ripped the underside of the wing. I asked if he thought it might be worth pointing it out to someone, and he said "no, they'll notice" I was absolutely pooing myself until they told us that there would be a delay whilst a new panel was fitted onto the wing. Saying that, I'm pretty sure air traffic controllers earn a little bit above minimum wage.

As to the original question, no, but I haven't really had that much food delivered. I agree though it would depend on where I was. If I were in a flat two storeys up with no lift, I might chuck him a couple of quid, but it would depend on how flush I was feeling.
  • No I wouldnt, it wouldnt really cross my mind to do so. It's not like I am paying for my goods at the door so would even have cash available to do so.
I also do the lifting of the bags into my house, so he just has to stand there anyway.

I pay for my food and upto £4.50 for delivery, I think I've given the firm enough money right there. x
    1,2 & 5p: Christmas day food £9.31
    10 & 20p: misc savings £2.70
    50p: Christmas presents £3.50
    £2: holidays £2.00

I don't tip either - well not very often. In a restaurant if the service has been extremely good, but even that goes against my beliefs: people should do a good job for not other reward than a salary, and they should be paid a fair wage.

Services such as hairdressing and meals at restaurants or take aways, etc are expensive enough without customers having to pay extra, whilst managers line their pocket and pay their employees peanuts.

People work for a variety of reasons and, surprisingly, money isn't always their top motivation.

What is a "fair wage"? Very subjective, I feel.

You make a sweeping statement about "managers" lining their pockets: is that *all* managers? Or mayber just the managers you know personally?

I never tip the Ocado man. My road is very easy to access, I have a huge driveway so he can pull right up to the house, and I always pick the delivery slots where it says 'we are already delivering in your area at this time'. I carry the bags in to the house - he is here for less than a minute.

And even after reading this thread, today I DEFINITELY wouldn't be tipping as I just had a phone call telling me my delivery will be THREE HOURS late! So much for making the Christmas cake today. However, I will still be kind and sympathetic to the driver as I know it's not his fault. I would never shout at anyone.

That's interesting, how did you find out that that is the case for all online grocery shops?

Thank you for your replies - at least now I know that it's not just me. OH wasn't saying that I should tip the driver, he just assumed that I would (not sure why), but then again, he tips Pizza delivery men whereas I don't.
