Well I am the opposite. I would expect a seller to leave feedback reflecting my part in the transaction - ie prompt payment.

What if I haven't received the item? What if I have received it, been very unhappy with the quality/speed of despatch or something, and left you stinking bad feedback? What then? Would you then leave me feedback saying 'prompt payer, thank you blah blah'? Yes? No? What exactly would you do that is different from leaving the buyer feedback after they have paid?

Depends what feedback you left for me. If you were being unreasonable, then I'd reply to your feedback on my feedback and you'd get no feedback on your account from me. If you were being reasonable-ish I:e someone disputed the colour of something they bought from me, but left me positive feedback (but just had to throw that in there, even though she'd already messaged me about it) then I would leave factual feedback if they paid promptly (she didn't) so I just said thank you and that was it.

Its because some sellers are daft enough to leave good feedback for dodgey buyers - that its hard to see who is good and who is bad.

A seller can only leave positive and good feedback. Anything else is removable.

I would say the end of the transaction for the seller is when they have received payment from the buyer. The seller requires no further action from the buyer, the buyer has done what was required of them - ie paid - and should be left feedback accordingly.

The end of the transaction for the buyer is receipt of the item.

Why is it that whether I am the seller or the buyer, it always seem that I have to be the first to give feedback? Also, why do so many people not bother to leave it even when you have given them good feedback?

Why do you? As a buyer I left once I have the goods and when I sold I left when I had received feedback from the buyer which confirmed they had the goods.

Up to you how you chose to leave feedback, some sellers only leave fed back once a month, some do it instantly on payment of goods, others after you leave feedback.
Do what suits you not others.

As for why some do not leave feed back C'est la vie"!
Everything has its beauty but not everyone sees it.

Of course, that is all moot as feedback is optional!

Yes, this tit for tat feedback from sellers is exactly why eBay changed it so that sellers could not leave negative feedback for their buyers, only positive. A buyer's feedback score was held to ransom by sellers who would neg in revenge, and this stopped buyers leaving accurate (negative) feedback for bad sellers. This was rife in the bad old days of eBay, as any of us who were using eBay then will testify.

A buyer pays, and then his part in the transaction of money for goods is finished. The goods may be fine, or they may not be, or they may get lost and there may be a dispute or not - all of that is the sellers part of the transaction. The buyer has already done his part. This is why buyers get really irritated by sellers waiting for them to leave feedback, particularly those of us who experienced that old tit for tat feedback thing in the old days.

I particularly dislike it when sellers say that they wait for feedback to 'know that the transaction is completed' because the truth is, if the buyer is unhappy ("unreasonable") the seller will not leave feedback at all or worse. Even though the transaction is completed.

The current eBay rules are indeed restrictive on sellers, especially because there is no way to flag up truly bad buyers so that other sellers can be warned. However it would still be pointless to do this as a buyer can bid in the last few seconds and a seller cannot do anything about it.

Prompt payment may not be the only part the buyer plays though - they may be a scammer or may make untrue accusations against you etc. Of course I'm not suggesting you leave feedback saying they scammed you unless you know so (eg you knew the serial number of the console you sold, they claimed it arrived non-working, they send back a console with a different serial number and when you message them they ignore you). However in a situation where they could have but you are unsure (eg you tested the console but didn't note the serial number) you could at least leave no feedback. If everyone on eBay did this then it would prevent scammers from building up rep to go on to scam more easily and with higher value items. If the person isn't a scammer then one member not leaving feedback isn't going to make any difference.

It also defeats the whole point of repping if you're just going to give everyone a positive without seeing the transaction through first.

It's also worth remembering that since a seller can't leave a buyer a negative that they have more to lose. If a buyer is honestly bad and you leave such a comment then they get a positive with a negative comment that is much less noticeable and practically gone once they get further feedback and the comment gets pushed pages back. A seller, on the other hand, has that negative recorded clearly for others to see. In addition to this the seller has more to lose as buyers can see rep before they choose to bid, sellers have to wait for a buyer to bid/buy and then check their rep for comments (which again may be hard to find).

What if I haven't received the item?

This depends on how the problem was raised. If you were to send messages after a few days accusing me of not posting, were rude and then left a neg then I'd leave a comment about this. However if you asked poiletly where your item was, were happy to wait until it counts as officially lost for the refund etc then I'd leave a comment about prompt payment etc.

If bad feedback was left then it would be a negative comment in return because bad feedback is designed for bad sellers who are also unco-operative when you message them about the problem (eg you message saying item is not as described, they just say not their problem). This is something I would never do. If they were unhappy and there was a genuine problem that was my fault (eg I'd copied from a previous listing and forgot to change size from 8 to 12) then I would refund and would expect either a positive, neutral or no feedback after the refund as then there has been a problem but it's been resolved. If the problem wasn't my fault (eg item gets lost in the post, I send a copy of proof of posting so they know I did post it, then once enough time has passed for it to be classed as lost I refund them + claim from RM) then I'd expect a positive as it is clear that it wasn't a problem with me.
  • I agree. I have left bad feedback to a seller when they don't bother leaving me positive feedback when I paid within 10 seconds of auction close. I am also a seller on eBay and have been for 15 years, I always leave feedback immediately I am paid - yet many don't even bother to leave feedback even though they are obviously happy with their item.

    Annoys me a lot!
How pathetic you are and you are totally abusing the feedback system. If you really do do that, then you will find yourself banned before long.

Feedback is VOLUNTARY, not compulsory. Plus the fact that some sellers have various methods for leaving feedback. Mine, for instance is that I leave feedback once a month. So if you gave me bad feedback for not 'getting round to leaving it' you would be reported.

No feedback is a good thing as feedback doesnt actually mean anything but the stars can make or break a seller. No feedback means no bad stars.

The end of the transaction for the buyer is receipt of the item.

If only that were true - but how is that the end for the seller when the buyer can issue a chargeback, claim none receipt, send back the item used, file an INR, leave unfair feedback, or demand a full or partial refund etc etc etc?

When the buyer is happy - then the transaction as ended. Its pretty clear really. Only the buyer can say when the transaction is finished.

As a buyer, when I get my item I will leave appropriate feedback.

As a seller, I would probably wait until the buyer has left feedback.

It just seems that the transaction would be concluded.
