Virgin doubled BB speed.

Must admit, I am reading VM website and the Fair use policy is pretty vague to be honest. My wifi is backed up with password security.0

Password security is easy to break really.. There are tools available online.
I was like you once.. just using VM Hub out of the box with my password without giving it a second thought. But my speeds were being capped even when I was not using the internet so I started being suspicious.
Now I not only protect my wifi with password but also disabled DHCP, reduced number of available IPs to 8 (same as number of connected PCs, mobiles, printers etc. in my house) and set static IPs for them. I also allow only hardware MAC approved by me. I no longer broadcast my SSID, I changed it once not broadcasted.
It may sound technical and it doesn't give you plug n play flexibility as every new piece of hardware needs to be set up not only by SSID and password but also IPs and DNS need to be assigned at first use MAC for it has to be allowed.
But I've never had data capping problem ever since. Luckily no real hackers live in my area. You would be surprised what the range of your wifi is and how many people can access it in your area.0 -
This is wifi situation in my place. if I was a thief I would use one of those out of the box wifis that people didn't even bother/didn't know how to change SSID.
They are all available and waiting and I bet people wouldn't even noticed if I used theirs. It's illegal to do so so I won't. My signal is the strongest one in that picture.0 -
I know it goes on but thought I might be safe from that. I can see other BB signals around when I log on, just assumed they would be locked and safe, how wrong can you be. Your info would be invaluable to someone who knows their way around these systems. You may have guessed, that 'aint me. Thanks for your time, I will get my teenage son on this project, right up his street.
Thanks again.0 -
Catalogue of fun last night. I called VM and reported issue, again. Very helpfull guy offered me free upgrade to 30M and a new hub was on the way. After the call, they auto re started my modem? Anyhow, it was having non of it and resulted in another 2 hours on the phone. Basically, they updated BB to 30, and my current old VM modem, threw in the towel. Engineer is booked for Saturday am, so no service until at least then. Happy days?0
