  • Never said it did.

I said it makes it hard to hold a pen.

Other things too, like lifting a ream of paper, or removing a bundle of paper off the printer. Using a stapler. Hole punch. Kinda things you need in a desk job.

    Typing was fine.

i was in a car accident once. it stopped me gripping. even a newspaper would fall out of my grip. didn't stop me working. I think I was off a week or so after the accident (my car was rammed by a truck and then went through a wall). this person needs to (excuse the pun) get a grip!

Garbage. Hawkings wrote a book and so did Jean-Dominique Bauby. not being able to grip doesn't stop them typing.

Not but they are none too interesting no one would want to read what they typed.

I don't think their words per minute would hack it as a PA.

  • Woohoo! Lucky beggars.

So you've budgeted, your freezer is full (if you have one, that is, as you wouldn't be allowed money to replace it if it broke as no cash is allowed to be saved).

Would they be allowed to spend £1 on a lottery ticket if the freezer is full? Or should they stock up on a new lightbulb every fortnight?

    Your pedanticness shows no bounds.

I merely showed alternative options for spending that pound a week which in my opinion was better use of the money.

Here's another idea (thinking of the children).
Save up that pound each week and buy the kids another toy at Christmas time

They might want to consider the options from this shop

From the sounds of it, your pro-welfare. Do you believe they should get more benefits?
Even give them all an extra £1 a week.
That way they can buy TWO lottery tickets. "Lucky beggars"

I already said unexpected disability could have a big impact, but with that benefits would also be very different to which I have always been fine with benefits to those with geniune disabilities.

My point is with proper financial planning you get quite a buffer which will absorb the majority of problems, combine this with a good working ethic and you won't need any buffers for very long.

I completely agree poo happens, but it isn't what happens in life that matters, its how we deal with it.

You are right attitude to adversity makes a big difference.

But even the best can be overwhelmed from time to time. Many never will possess that level of resilience either because they never manage to achieve it, despite trying, or simply aren't on that wavelength.

Ha. Well theres a first for everything, and that's the first time I've ever been described as pro-welfare! Especially amusing considering our arguments over housing benefits in the past which you seem tp be so "pro" on.

On a serious note, of course I'm pro welfare. People would be dying all around us without it. That doesn't mean I want people lavishing on benefits for years.

I just don't get the problem with spending a quid on a lottery ticket. And secondly, all those with the problem cannot give us any idea of how you'd actually police it.

What I find absolutely fascinating is that you can be so against someone spending £1 of welfare on a lottery ticket, but are so pro SMI mortgage benefits....for life. Anyone would think you'd invested in houses!

The way to police it would be to confiscate any winnings, just like if a 15 year old wins.

In the end, is it right to give people benefits money to gamble with?

Well I wouldn't like to be on benefits...full stop...it can't be very nice at all despite what we read in the papers that people are on 20 grand a year..etc etc..
50 years ago theres was full employment....gradually this has slipped away...no matter whos been in government..
We've gone from half a million on the dole to 2.5m...3m on the sick...2m at Uni...thats before we take into account early retired..
7.5m people without a job....thats why theres benefits...its just a pity like all systems its got its problems....and the majority who are claiming are decent folk...but slaughtered for it..

Any winnings, or just the jackpot / higher end wins? That would just leave them languishing on benefits? I don't really see anything positive that comes out of that, other than again, removing dignity.

If I were on benefits, I'd simply give my winning ticket to someone else in the family if that was the case.
