Latest update- cats now have free run of house but have chosen to ignore each other! Sophie is only used to the kitchen and utility and has shown no interest in coming out to explore the house.
Smudge has been in to see her and just sat down and watched her warily from about 6 feet away. She then came out and is behaving normally. Sophie is asleep in her new bed and Smudge is asleep in our bed as usual.
They are both eating and drinking and using their own litter trays as normal which was my biggest worry.
I know it's early days and i am sure it wont always be as positive but it is already going much better than I could have hoped for.0 -
you have done a wonderful thing . Thankyou"if the state cannot find within itself a place for those who peacefully refuse to worship at its temples, then it’s the state that’s become extreme".Revd Dr Giles Fraser on Radio 4 20170

It soundfs as if you have done a wonderful job with Sophie, i have heard similiar reports about the RSPCA and i am disgusted,as Sophie was obviously NOT a healthy stray
I have to say our local branch is very good, and i have called them to injured strays before and they came straight away
It is nice to hear of animals being treated well and kindly, there are such terrible cases of cruelty these days0 -
Update 6 days in- hi everyone - cant believe it's only been six days- what a transformation.
Sophie has healed so quickly- most of the scabs have dropped off with daily combing. Yesterday she started to groom herself for the first time and to play with toys.
We had a small problem with her constantly demanding food within ten mins of eating and the wet food smells vile both before and after being eaten!vet said it was fine for her to share Smudges prescription only food (royal canin high dilution for prev bladder stones) so we have introduced that and she has taken to it - its always available- she eats what she needs and is then satisfied for around 3 hours and it will make life easier once they are together.
We are going slowly with the getting to know you's. Sophie prefers to stay in the kitchen but will venture into the small lounge ( which would be the dining room in a normal house!) if someone is in there. Smudge is sticking to the big lounge and the upstairs. Her food and litter tray are in the hall so she has her own space.
At night and if we all go out we shut the kitchen door so they can both feel safe. Sophie is really submissive to Smudge and Smudge hisses if she sees her but nothing more. They haven't got closer than 6 foot.!
I am pleased it hasn't been any worse. Our main concern has always been for Smudge. She is put out but most of the time seems able to ignore that there is another cat somewhere in the house and is behaving normally.
It's early days yet. It's hard to imagine they will ever be friends and able to eat in the same room but hopefully they wil reach a level of tolerance. Here are latest pics-as before some kind person will need to make them available to see.

I would like to think our story gives some comfort to anyone who has has had a pet go missing-it's not always a sad end for the pet. (needless to say Sophie had not been microchipped and we have established she has been a stray in the neighbourhood for at least 3 months and no one appears to be looking for her).
Thanks again for all the advice.0 -

Maybe try Feliway plug in, Onemorecat?
Thanks - they needed 'COLOR="Blue"]IMG]http://' and then the '[/IMG[/COLOR' at the end and the ! taken out.
It's good going so far - and food does cause a lot of cats to abandon hostilities, especially when favourite treats are about.I could dream to wide extremes, I could do or die: I could yawn and be withdrawn and watch the world go by.Yup you are officially Rock n Roll

I did that with the 'insert image' function.
I wonder why I got one and two to post fine but three and four needed the http? Maybe because I was cross posting with you. Declutterbug-in-progress.⭐️⭐️⭐️ ⭐️⭐️0 -
Thank you so much for sorting out the photos - as you can probably tell I have no idea what I am doing and am trying to f ollow my son's instructions on how to cut and paste the links so they dont look like links! Dont know whether you need to be a member for a certain length of time or have a certain number of posts before you can post links? ( I can understand why they have that rule).0
