I tried to use the mooncup quite a few years ago & had to stop. Frankly they were making me feel queasy & ill. I don't know if it was in my head or some reaction from the material they are made from. I am a very heavy bleeder as well & it really freaked me out how much & how quickly it filled up. After a few months I couldn't do it anymore. But I can really see the benefits if you don't have any ill effects from it. Good luck. I never really had that much of a strong stomach.
Don't worry about the world coming to an end today. It's already tomorrow in Australia. ;)

Just something for the one suffering from heavy bleeding.

I suffered from it too. I don't like tampons and a thick pad needed changing every couple of hours, which was irritating.

I went on the pill for contraceptive reasons and my periods have been a doddle since! They are much shorter, a lot lighter and less painful. It might be something to consider if they are that bad.

Thanks Becles - have already done that and yes, taking it makes a huge difference. But as we want another little Purplepatch soon, it's not really an option ;)

After that the family will be complete and I'll certainly consider other options, perhaps the Mirena coil as have heard positive things about that.

But yes, I will go to see my GP in the meantime as you suggest Savvy Sue. All these things I'm reading have made me realise that it is worth having it checked out. I estimate this month I will have lost 320mls ish, which seems a lot when doctors apparently consider anything over 80mls heavy. 80mls would be scant for me!

If you've been trying for another little purplepatch for a while then definitely worth getting yourself checked out. Apart from anything else if you are anaemic before your get pregnant it ain't gonna get any better afterwards! Good luck!

purplepatch i think you should see your doctor. i was getting anaemic with my periods, and tried for a baby jellyhead for 3 years before having treatment for endometriosis. i had valium on standby to have a mirena coil fitted if it all got too much and i gave up on the baby idea, i still have the valium and will have a mirena as soon as i can, 6 weeks after the baby is born i think.

there are treatments, it's not just the pill. i use tranexamic acid to reduce the amount of blood i lose and i was told that it's safe when trying for a baby. you only take it when you're bleeding, for the first 3 days usually so just to get you through the worst of it. it's worth getting checked, maybe a scan to see if you have fibroids? i've heard they can affect fertility besides which they can make you anaemic.

tmi i know but if you have pain too (all the time i mean, not just during a period) it can affect fertility purely because you're in too much discomfort to have sex very often, so it might be worth getting checked for endometriosis or fibroids.

this mooncup sounds fab, but i'm hoping that a mirena will put an end to my periods :D

Well, I've had my mooncup for 1 and a bit periods now, and to be honest, I'm not getting on with it all that well. Putting it in is a bit fiddly but I generally manage to get it in far enough before it pops open and I can't push it any further. Leakage hasn't been an issue; my periods are quite light at the moment but I'm planning on coming off the pill soon so that may change.

The bit that I have most trouble with is getting the thing out! I struggle to get a grip on the base to release the seal, and then when I'm finally at the stage of getting the rim out it gets very painful. Maybe I'm just not relaxed enough. I get thrush a lot too, which probably makes it worse.

Anyone else having/had the same problems?

Just in my second month of using my mooncup. Must say that time it's been a lot easier than the first time. Think I'm getting it in just the right position now, whereas last month it was a bit uncomfortable. However, I do get aching pains at the top of my inner thighs which I've never experienced before. All in all though, a massive improvement (both personally and environmentally) over tampons. Will definitely continue, as I'm feeling quite pleased with myself at the moment!

This looks the same as a mooncup, which is considerably cheaper & has been discussed at length on these forums before & comes with a money back gurantee (I can recommend it!)

Is it really good? It looks a bit uncomfortable. Do women really use it?

I have a sensitive question though, i hope you dont mind me asking :o:
Does it not come slip down during the day, or when you are on the loo? I mean, does it stay in place once its in?

Just found this fantastic tip for cleaning:

Cleaning: some practical advice. Boots (and I'm sure other chemists) sell extremely discreet denture baths. I bought one (about £1.75 or so) and it fits the mooncup perfectly. If you live in shared accommodation and don't want to boil or sterilise your cup in the kitchen then just pop it into the denture bath. I used cold water sterilising tabs found in the baby section (also from boots about a pound for 60 or so - v. cheap) and made up a solution with half a tablet in a 1lt water bottle. There is no hassle and it's very clean and easy, and private if that matters to you.

I'm off to savers in the morning for my denture bath ;) another bout of comedy one liners from my hubby when i come home with it no doubt, lol.
