  • Does anyone know how to make sugar free custard without artifical sweetners?
Boyfriend doesn't eat sugar but is ok with honey or agave syrup...would it work just to replace the sugar with one of these? (adjusting for liquid volume)

There is no reason for you not to use any type of sweetener you wish.

Maple syrup, Honey or whatever, you might have a slight change of taste but so what!
I used to be indecisive but now I am not sure.

Out of interest, why won't your boyfriend eat sugar, but will eat honey or syrup?
  • He is diabetic and his blood sugar levels stay ok with honey or agave syrup. Not so with sugar, maple syrup etc.
  • And he won't eat artificial sweetners as they are artficial :-)

I am really sorry if I have doubled up and caused the board guides some more work. I did search, and searched 'advanced' and 'titles only' but olny how to make custard creams came up.

Can you make a custard from ingredients in the home? I normally a Birds custard powder kind of girl but that is just because I don't know any better.

I'm forever wanting to make puddings but then don't as I don't have any custard powder in.

Is there a recipe anyone knows about?
  • Not sure if you can make the normal yellow kinda custard without custard powder? But you can make vanilla custard which is very similar but super yummy with just corn flour if you have that? Google a few recipes and see which ingredients you prefer ... method is similar.

Der! Apologies. I should have just done that, but I suppose there would be no need for a forum if we all did that so I don't feel too stupid.

I have found this from BBC food. It came right up in the google search :o

I'll share it for future searchers. http://www.bbc.co.uk/food/recipes/homemadecustard_3102

    Ingredients
    290ml/10fl oz milk
1 vanilla pod, split lengthways or tsp good quality vanilla essence
    2 egg, yolks only
    1 tbsp caster sugar

    Preparation method
Heat the milk with the vanilla pod and allow to just come to the boil. In a large bowl, beat the eggs with the sugar.
Pour the hot milk over the egg yolks whisking vigorously. When completely mixed in, return to the pan.
Stir over a low heat until the mixture thickens sufficiently to coat the back of a spoon. This will take 5-6 minutes.
Drain into a bowl, remove vanilla pod (or add essence if using).

    Hi fuddle,

This thread has recipes and advice that may help:

HM custard (no more Birds custard powder)

I'll add your thread to that one later to keep the suggestions together.
