Impomdasp, sounds like your Granma was making the real McCoy god bless her! Its typically around 8 egg yolks mixed with sugar, then cooked very carefully for about 15 - 20 minutes with milk, cream and a vanilla pod in a sauce pan.
You cant beat real custard, but it does make a big hole in your shopping budget. Well worth it though for special occasions and showing off! Plus any left overs can be made into ice-cream!
Edited: For spelling mistake and additional cream ingredient!SIMPLE SIMON - Met a pie man going to the fair. Said Simple Simon to the pie man, "What have you got there?" Said the pie man unto Simon, "Pies, you simpleton!"0 -
Thanks for that HappyIdiotTalk.
Yes, it certainly tasted luxurious but as a DFW I doubt I'll be making any with all those eggs:eek:0 -

Yep we know, where do you think Mr. Zziggi got his idea from?
. But since we normally have cornflour, food colouring/flavouring, sugar in the cupboard anyway, why pay Birds for a tub of theirs?

Incidentally, Mr Bird came up with his idea of cornflour custard because his wife was allergic to eggs -like my ddIt's interesting (though not surprising in this country) that many people can't remember or don't know that custard is really made from eggs, sugar and cream/milk. We think the fake food is the real food

Oops yes, I forgot about the cream! I thought I was missing something when I described the recipe but I just couldn't think what it was.SIMPLE SIMON - Met a pie man going to the fair. Said Simple Simon to the pie man, "What have you got there?" Said the pie man unto Simon, "Pies, you simpleton!"0 -

Thats a good price.
I bought my last vanilla pods at the Good Food show at the NEC last November from someone who was a real vanilla nerd (he did have an impressive array of vanilla products though).
Apparently a good vanilla pod has to be slightly moist, and not dry as is typically sold at the supermarket. I got a discount, but they still worked out a lot more expensive than your Aldi pods. And to be honest I couldn't see an improvement over my supermarket pods. Next time I'm in Aldi I'll grab a few (I prefer Lidl these days).SIMPLE SIMON - Met a pie man going to the fair. I used to make a 'pretend' real custard using a recipe from a very old 'blender' paperback recipe book. It is still packed away in boxes having moved house but someone out there might still have it.
The recipe used milk, butter, sugar, egg and cornflour. Vanilla extract too I think.
Milk and butter was brought to simmering and the rest was put in blender. Heated milk was poured into the blender and then all was whizzed.
Mixture was then poured back into the pan over a low heat. Custard was stirred continuously until thick.
This is very much like classic custard but the cornflour kept it together.
It was a very pale colour, but I didn't see any need to put colouring in it.
Does anyone out there still have the old paperback 'Blender' book to check the quantities?0 -
A while ago there was a thread about how to make HM custard. Mr. Zziggi came up with this last night. Tasted fine (we did it with the almond flavour).
Alternative to making custard with Birds Custard Powder
1 pt milk
2 tbsp cornflour
1-2 tbsp sugar
1 capful flavouring (almond or vanilla etc)
1 capful yellow food colouring (optional)
1)put milk in the pan
2)mix all the other ingrediants in a measuring jug and add a couple of spoonfuls of cold milk to make a thick paste.
3)Boil the milk. When the milk is boiling, pour it into the jug and mix vigerously with the ingrediants.
Watch the share prices of Birds custard tumble....
does this really work?? no eggs??
i usually use eggs but thats a bit tempremental lol
gonna try this :money:No Unapproved or Personal links in signatures please - FT30
