Custard powder has annatto in for colour... http://www.fedupwithfoodadditives.info/factsheets/Factannatto.htmThere is nothing either good or bad but thinking makes it so.0 -
Could you not just add a very small amount of turmeric to it to give it colour?
I was watching something yesterday about a new line in cakes being introduced that nly had all natural colours added. The colourings were made from the pigment fron beetroot, spinach and carrots! There's no taste in them just colour. There were some others that were coloured with paprika and turmeric. They had a delicate but nice colour and as they're used in small quantities they don't carry the taste.:smileyhea0 -
:T I want to add a big thanks for the cobbler recipe too. I made one with pears, it was so fast to make and my very very fussy 2yo loved it. He had three helpings (never has seconds of anything!). The next day, he asked for some pear cobbler and when I told him it had all gone he cried!
Going to try the custard recipe next, I've been looking for a HM way of making it without curdling it, or baking it for hours!
Thanks so much Black Saturn! :j :j"Then, when every last cent

And he went."

On the programme they used a tiny amount in icing and it gave it a lemony colour with no curry taste:smileyhea0 -
Theres nothing to beat real custard! but I was in Tesco Express today & found reduced packets of Birds custard (just add water!) for 27p, so I stocked up. I was brought up on the stuff so I'll enjoy it just as well!planing for the future, living for today0

A while ago there was a thread about how to make HM custard. Mr. Zziggi came up with this last night. Tasted fine (we did it with the almond flavour).
Alternative to making custard with Birds Custard Powder
1 pt milk
2 tbsp cornflour
1-2 tbsp sugar
1 capful flavouring (almond or vanilla etc)
1 capful yellow food colouring (optional)
1)put milk in the pan
2)mix all the other ingrediants in a measuring jug and add a couple of spoonfuls of cold milk to make a thick paste.
3)Boil the milk. When the milk is boiling, pour it into the jug and mix vigerously with the ingrediants.
