this has to be a wind up, surely?

Nope. I got alot of neck pain on my old mattress and now I'm becoming a bit OCD about beds

just buy a thin piece of chipboard and replace the wood, why faff with a book.

Good idea. How do I replace it though? There's a sewn on cover on the top? Does the wood come apart or something?:o

    They do when they're broken!

But I don't even know if it is 'broken' a such. Surely I don't need to buy a whole new bed just for a bit of extra support.

Any chance of any pictures to help us understandthe problem? One of the bed, one of the matress, one of the bed with matress in place, and one with you laying on the matress so we can see your spinal posture.
Some days you're the dog..... most days you're the tree! :D

Surely if the bed's so bad it's costing you jobs (which does seem remarkably OTT by the way) then it would be worth it. Beds, like most things, have a finite life. If you've had this one since childhood then maybe it's time to get something else.

Spin the bed round so that the busted bit is at the bottom, you can remove the headboard and put it at the end where your head will now be.

I will provide you with all I can later(around 5). If you type in 'Hypnia cheap memory foam mattress' into ebay.co.uk you'll get the mattress I got last week. Have no idea how good it is.

The thing is, I have 3 walls touching my bed.:( plus cuboards were put up just above the bed after it was moved in.
Also the headboard has been properly nailed on. I would just lay the other way but there's a crappy shelf that's been up at the end which only leavesa gap of about the height of a size 8 foot between it and the mattress. FML
